    Words are not violence.
    Insults are not violence.
    Slurs are not violence.
    Provocations are not violence.
Vile disgusting, racially, misogynist taunts are NOT violence.

Responding to words with physical violence is wrong. Full stop.

Not to defend Will Smirh action, but it was no comedy club with a 3rd class comedian thinking it funny to make jokes about his audience.
However it is the oscars and jokes about some prominent people are expected as always. Making jokes about a well known medical condition would have been way behind any red line though. Even in a comedy club.

Just one time when two guys with a knive wanted to rob her. She was alone though - broke armed ones arm and some ribs... and got charged with assault. Having a master level in Wing Chun she should have known how to defend without hurting him in tjat way. Got cleared though really easy... ;)

Just to demonstrate that even if you have real cause to defend yourself or someone else it can still cause trouble.

But back to your original question. I myself never had to physically defend my wife.
However, at times a physical appearence helped to discourage guys who did not realize they were not wanted.

This is within the confines of a consensual relationship. I'm not sure these two guys talked ahead of time and set boundaries or had a safe word.

Also, for the person that knows comedy and mentioned Don Rinkles [sic] I think you might be referring to Don Rickles.

It surprises me how many people feel that physical violence is a warranted response here. These shows are basically light roasts of celebrities with awards mixed in, and I think it's wrong to open the door to violence because someone was offended.

Will and Jada have celebrity and wealth. They could have easily left the event and called attention to her issue and why they were offended. In that scenario the attention is focused on Chris and whether his joke was inappropriate.

Reacting this way would set an example for handling difficult situations with tact. Instead, his emotional response has people puffing their chests and becoming internet tough guys.

I would have enjoyed seeing how the slap would go had it been a someone that was trained in self defense like Rogan. I'm quite sure Will would have stayed in his seat or regretted walking up on stage.

I hope people might reconsider their stance on reacting violently to a situation like this. It normalizes violence against a weaker person, and it very well could land you and your wife in a MORE dangerous situation.

There is a time and place for violence, but this wasn't it.

To tell you the truth, I still don’t know how hockey can have fist fights and people getting hit with sticks!!

I know I know…that’s the unwritten rules of hockey. Every where else it’s assault, or assault with a deadly weapon. I can’t hit people at work, heck I can’t even hurt their feelings. Yet hockey has its roots in it and everyone looks the other way. You can’t get mad at someone and hit them with your fist. That is a place of business. I think it’s odd.

Will Smith had the chance to go up on stage and call Chris out and humiliate him on stage for a cheap joke and then walk out of the Oscars as a hero.

But let me be a predator on the street (more fun), your out with your mistress. I tell her she “looks like a cheap whore”, Plenty of people around. You punch me, I can take the hit, might let you take a couple more, then if somebody else doesn’t restrain you I’m putting you down. When the police come to arrest you, there is nobody around to protect your wife, until you make bail.

Now that is a scenario that would piss my wife off!

Honestly, if someone disrespected my wife in my presence, I'd most likely be there holding her back from belting them. She tends to be hot-headed.

Seriously, though, my wife is a person with her own agency, not a child. I don't need to defend her. As I said, it's more likely I have to defend the person who pissed her off.

That said, if someone disrespects my wife, I will have my own opinions about that behavior, separate from my wife. Any actions I take are about MY relationship with the person giving insult, not my wife.

Re-read it, but with irony and a sense of humour.

"Responding to words with physical violence is wrong. Full stop."

The "Full stop" in that context is like saying "Not under any circumstance"

Well...I was just making a point, by analogy, and a fair one at that I think. Which is... That it isn't always that simple.

Yes, it was wrong, and it is most usually wrong to use violence, but not always immoral. Sometimes violence can be justified.

In the case discussed, Will Smith made a mistake that he regrets. We've all done that, and as you all know. You don't need others to make you feel worse, when you're beating yourself up over it.

This (What the press are doing) is a just fucking witch-hunt. It is insidious, nasty and probably fuelled in the right-wing media (not here fortunately) by prejudice.

Designed to make everyone click click click,....Cha Ching!!!! They tell you exactly what you want to hear. Click click click Cha Ching!!! Click click click. Love them or loathe them....click click click. Cha Ching!!! What will these idiots want to click on today? They don't care if it makes you happy, sad, angry, relaxed. They just need you to keep fucking clicking. Click click click Cha Ching!!!

It was wrong, but it was just a slap.

Yes. Without a doubt. If I didn't she would use corporal punishment on me for not defending her.

This is what the extreme right wing means when they use the word cuck, the belief that it is OK to let some asshole even under the guise of comedian disrespect your wife and not so anything about it. Honor, courage, commitment are not just words they are a way of life, Will Smith had all 3 when he slapped that asshole. He deserves an award, and not the shame he is getting.

I’ve never understood this point of view. What’s so bad about correcting someone with a smack? Certainly every time I’ve been on the receiving end I pretty much had it coming and it was educative.
I’m not too interested in celebrities and their little spats but this did seem like a brief oasis of real-world behaviour in an otherwise decadent and effete showbiz world. And as for the recipient of the punch, whose name I forget - he’s a shrieking and deeply unfunny little man who merits a smack just for who he is.

Right or wrong it speaks more to celebrity privilige then anything else. Anyone else would have been removed in handcuffs. Whole thing was staged for ratings anyway. He didn't mind his sons friends entanglement but how dare a comedian tell a joke.

Well yes, if it involved regular folk but at a TV awards ceremony. If it was regular folks in a regular setting no one would have thought of involving law enforcement, it’d just be an unremarkable squabble, swiftly concluded with a well-deserved smack in the mouth and no harm done.

Comedians tell jokes so the slap was unnecessary and showed any lack of self control. She's cheated on him how many times and he's never reacted violently.
