The Great "anti" Porn debate

There's plenty of awareness campaigns for alcohol, drugs, sugar etc, so I don't disagree that there should be a level of awareness around porn addiction. Porn addiction is something that is generally overlooked or ignored - likely because it's still seen as quite a taboo topic.

 

The credit card companies generally disassociate themselves with sex work of any kind, including porn. When you sign up for porn sites, the payments aren't processed by the credit card companies. They're processed by third-party companies that act as intermediaries. Credit card companies immediately turn off merchant accounts of anyone they find doing sex work, including escorts, massage parlors, cam girls, etc. (as does PayPal, Venmo, and other payment processors). There would literally have to be an entire remaking of the billing infrastructure to create a system whereby people are required to "pay" for access to porn.

In other words, not happening.

And as someone else pointed out above, there are a shit ton of people who produce amateur porn purely for entertainment and put it out there for free. And, in fact, I very, very rarely even watch porn produced by non-amateurs myself these days (the amateur stuff is just so much more "real" than the studio produced stuff).

Yeah, they've delayed it three times now. Even if it worked in the UK, it would be illegal to do it here because have this pesky little First Amendment in the way.

The First Amendment not only guarantees the right to speak without interference from the government, it also prevents the government from censoring or inhibiting access to the speech of others with certain very narrowly limited exceptions.

It didn't go anywhere because the lawyers were telling them it would violate the First Amendment. Congress tried to pass legislation to restrict minors' access to porn twice, with the Children's Online Protection Act and the Communications Decency Act. In both cases, the SCOTUS ruled the relevant sections unconstitutional.

Pornography is protected speech in the US (Miller v. California, 1973), and so the government is not allowed to impose restrictions on its access (which requiring credit cards for purchasing it such as what Lucy is suggesting would be). A significant number of people do not have any credit cards, and requiring such for access to porn would be a de facto inhibition of their access. And even if such a thing were legal, given that somewhere between 15%-20% of teenagers have their own credit cards or access to their parents credit cards these days, that's not a terribly effective solution, either. Anyone who actually thinks that simply requiring a credit card # to gain access to porn is deluded. Given the things that go on on the Internet now, I can't even understand how someone would think that would work.

Quite frankly, I am literally astounded that some of you folks are so incredibly clueless about this stuff. I guess those living in the UK or outside the US could be forgiven for that, since they deal with a different set of laws than we do, but anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of how the Internet works should realize how ineffectual trying to limit access to porn would be.

 

Because I can get what I need for free? In broad terms, if there's something I'd like to watch that requires paying for it, I have absolutely no problem whatsoever paying for it. I have paid for access to porn sites in the past. These days, as I mentioned earlier, there's so much free amateur stuff out there (that has more sense of reality to it than studio porn anyway) that I just don't see the need to pay for it.

To be honest, though, these days there isn't a lot of porn watching anyway. My cock's in a cage and watching porn would just be counterproductive.

You seem to have a reading comprehension problem. I didn't say people don't pay with credit cards. What I said was:

In the US, it absolutely is a right. The US Supreme Court has said so. It doesn't matter whether it is "free" or not.

 

How can someone *possibly* be this clueless?

If cherishing my right to view what I want without interference from the government is "selfish," then I'll wear that title without any reservation at all. The solution to some issue that causes "harm" to a subset of people is not to prohibit everyone from engaging in whatever behavior is considered "harmful." History is replete with examples where that was tried and it failed miserably (see: Prohibition).
