I as referring to the space between the ring and the cage portion. A ring that's too tight usually causes a burning sensation of the skin. The cramping usually indicates the space between is too small.
Try larger spacer.

 

Hmm, I got horrendous blue balls, similar to what I got one night with my second girlfriend back when we started in 2005 (hence I know what it was) just on Friday.
