    Tumblr will permanently ban adult content from its platform on December 17th in a move that will eradicate porn-related communities on the platform and fundamentally alter how the service is used. The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions, the company tells The Verge. The new policy’s announcement comes just days after Tumblr was removed from Apple’s iOS App Store over a child pornography incident, but it extends far beyond that matter alone. “Adult content will no longer be allowed here,” the company flatly states in a blog post set to be published on Monday.

    TBH, that's about 80% of their user base. They're literally shooting themselves in the face. They'll be the next MySpace of the social media world. I kind of figured when Yahoo bought them a few years ago, it would eventually come to this.

    Kind of sad, really, since my GF and I spend a lot of time on Tumblr looking at cuckold and femdom related stuff. Oh, well.

    Tumblr had a NSFW filter you could set if you didn't want to see porn (and was on by default when you created an account). If someone was "forced away" from Tumblr because of that, they probably weren't bright enough to be there in the first place.

    Very true, but a great many people and organizations (including a great many sex worker advocacy and harm prevention groups, sex therapists, authors, etc.) have their main presence on Tumblr.

    As I said in the other thread here about this, 80% of Tumblr's user base posts or looks at it for the pornish stuff, so I think they're shooting themselves in the face.

    I think there are too many porn offerings already on the web, so i can't see this breaking the world. males should not be viewing such material anyway, it takes their minds of more important tasks and commitments.

    Twitter has gone the same way, I get messages from men who's twitter feed is full of hardcore porn photos and videos. Surely there are better sites for it.

    The "more frequent" ones supposedly involve child porn being posted on Tumblr. This has been going on sporadically for the past several years, and was brought to the attention of their staff at least seven years ago. The technology exists to catch and remove that stuff automatically (Facebook, Twitter, and many other sites use it already), but Tumblr has refused to do anything about it. Until Apple removed their app from the IOS platform. THEN they decided to nuke the reason the vast majority of people use Tumblr to begin with. Sane adults (at least in our country) don't react to the occasional bad speech by banning all of that speech. They deal with the bad speech in a rational manner.

    Personally, I don't give two shits if Tumblr is around or not. I just think it's asinine to destroy the user base of your platform because you're too fucking lazy to deal with an issue that is reasonably simple to deal with if you invest the resources to do so.

    What is the website supposed to be used for? The non-sexual things I can think of almost certainly already have existing websites dedicated to them and I doubt people are suddenly going to switch over.
