It certainly is a downer and I'm sorry that you believe things to be as you described.

Sadly, I have to agree 100% with allaboutHer. I would love, love, love to do exactly as you suggested Mascara Snake because I know how uplifting a nice compliment CAN make someone feel. But like allaboutHer said, here in America, I think you'd more than likely be thought a pervert, predator or stalker and might even get slapped across the face for randomly complimenting someones physique. I don't want to risk the rejection or ill consequences that might come of it so I too, am courteous and will chat briefly if she says something to me first but that's about it. It's pathetic I know but on the bright side, at least the "unattractive" women and girls don't get compliments either. I do however, compliment my wife and daughter as much as I think to do so. I know it's not what you're suggesting but it's as close as I'll go.

Indeed it is. The both of you are simply making excuses and exacerbating your "perceived" problem by handing on you "fear of rejection" so that others may have also use the same excuses and to live in fear of this or that.

If you Americans want to live like that then it's entirely up to you. Please, no more about it in this thread.

A compliment can be given easily without venturing into the realms of stalking, perversion, or predatory behaviour, by the way Ms Amanda, that hat looks amazing on you :)

The uk is currently the epitome of political correctness, the thing is, women here still do enjoy a genuine compliment and, in my experience, always accept it graciously. Although it would probably be wise to stay away from physical features and avoid compliments like "nice tits love"

Thank you Jock, If I'd known that at the time then perhaps I would have been swayed to buy it.

I have never upset a female by telling her I like her shoes, top, or any other passing compliment, its probably what comes after the compliment that generally gets people sacked or slapped.

So DoodleBug, you are of the opinion that unattractive females should be ignored. A typically arrogant male, piglike comment. Do try to improve your attitude for heavens sake.

Doodlebug2055 I think you need to read the starting post, to find that it was not seeking such a sexist or boorish leering as is suggested when you talk about physique.

It was looking for you to compliment the lady on the effort she had taken to look smart and attractively turned out, without reference to her physical attributes or your subjective judgement on "attractiveness"

So let's get back to the original request rather than castigating people

Guys you really should try this, if you stick to original guidelines it's not really difficult to do just requires a little confidence.

Nothing specifically, I've done this a few times. Tho more recently I've been doing it with people I know, just dropping in a compliment to the conversation and moving on without looking for a response. The woman appreciates the comment but doesn't feel as if I'm trying to chat her up.

I tried to compliment women in my younger years which where taken as jest or me being cocky or rude (I did try ), now as i am older (47) I find that I get away with saying to a beautiful young girl that she looks gorgeous in that dress or that look really suits you etc. Gets me a really heart felt thank you, which makes everybody feel good, especially when my mistress watches me do it, and as she says they think your just a nice cute old man ( and I think great that cute thing is at last paying off). At last I can pay a lady a compliment without me looking precocious enough to be mocking her

I mostly seem to receive compliments from male strangers who are 50+.
Perhaps I remind them of their granddaughter? Or are older gentlemen are just more forward with compliments? Is it I that more mature men still have that sense of chivalry, like holding open the door and complimenting the ladies.
Has this sense of chivalry been swept away by the modern world?

You are right Ms, It was protocol for Men to let Women go 1st, raise their hats when passing in the street, offer Women seats on buses and trains. It's ironic because it was in the era before the surge of feminism in the 80s/90s which I for one strongly support.

i sincerely hope that it has not been swept away!..nor should it..
There is a distinct difference between misogyny / anti-feminism ..and being chivalrous and i for one am proud to be in the latter category .....but then i am a bit of an old bugger (with no granddaughters...yet)! lol.

There's an irony that as equality has increased, so chivalry (or basic manners if you prefer) has decreased. Personally I was brought up to understand that women weren't inferior, but they were different and that this difference put them on a different plane where they should be treated with courtesy and respect. That goes back to the first playground admonition that 'you don't hit girls' all the way through childhood to learn the basic manners such as opening doors and moderating language when talking to females.

Personally I think that the aggressive feminist agenda got it wrong when they took the line that equality meant doing everything a man could do. Male roles in society are often defined by aggression, be it physical, verbal and mental. In many ways the feminist agenda sought to for women to emulate and compete with those male characteristics rather than promoting the success of female characteristics that are so different and complimentary in societal terms to the male ones.

When out of manners and upbringing a male holds open a door for a women and gets a scowl or even to be told he's being patronising then he'll soon stop doing it.

One of the saddest things I see as a consequence of equality is the ladette culture where the object for girls seems to be to out drink, out swear and out fight their male contemporaries. For generations behind mine the idea that one doesn't hit girls is hard to swallow when being attacked by a drunk young girl out side a club. This urge to behave more male than genetic males also has the sad effect that learning to be a lady is not on the agenda of many girls. Being treated like one is often treated as an insult.

Increasing the female role in society is no bad thing, they bring many different qualities and perspectives. But I do think that the "equality" we have arrived at has been a levelling down where both sexes behave in roughly the same manner. Men don't show that old chivalry to other men and if women try to behave like men then there is no incentive for men to be chivalrous.

Perhaps it's one of the factors in what seems to be a rising consciousness for D/s where the female is dominant, that both parties are trying to re-establish some of old societal norms of respect and deference to the female ?

Just found this thread and I already do this on occasions, however, I will keep a more keen eye out now and report back the reactions of the lady in question.
For the record I love seeing a lady smile when I do it and it give us both a lift :)

Yesterday I went into my local shop and saw the lady behind the counter had had her hair done.
Wow what a difference and it made her look younger and really suited her.

After I had bought my bits I commented
" love the new hair do it really suits you "

The poor girl didn't know what to do or say, she went bright red but had the biggest smile on her face and said in an embarrassed high pitched voice.
    "Thank you"
    My reply was a quick
"It"s my pleasure" and I left the shop.
