I’ve been inspired by the ancient Stoic philosophers (Marcus Aurelius, Epectitus, etc.) for years. One of their basic practices is “voluntary discomfort”. These practices—waking up earlier than you’d prefer, exercising when you’d rather not, walking when it’d be easier to Uber—the Stoics would say, train the mind to lead the body, rather than the other way around.

My approach to chastity fits well with the Stoicism - I’m not a sissy and though I’m a BDSM switch, BDSM is more about sensations for me than submissiveness. My wife plays along with my chastity, but I am the one who drives it. I usually lock when I feel I’ve been masturbating too much.

I just started Daily Stoic’s 21 day New a year’s challenge, exercises and tasks to start the New Year. Today’s was a 30 second cold shower. I’ll integrate my chastity into these challenges.

Excellent. Your thinking is embodied in several philosophies.

For me, just WEARING the device is an act of stoicism/penance/asceticism. Even if my intent was to remove daily and masturbate, the wearing of the device would be helpful.

I think you are truly into something here. Chastity is so much more than masturbation prevention and keyholder control.

Chastity and semen retention are truly good for me physically, emotionally and spiritually.

I hope this string takes off. But if not, please ping me privately. I’d love to discuss more.

I've never really thought about this but it puts a framework around a couple of things I've been doing...

At work, if I've had to go outside while it was raining, cold or windy, in previous years I've spent a couple of minutes going to get my coat, do what was necessary outside and then put coat away when I returned inside. Now I more often than not just go outside in my shirt or t-shirt, get wet/cold while doing the 5 or 10 minute job, come back in and after a few minutes I feel refreshed and invigorated rather than inconvenienced by having to dress up and down to do the outdoor task. So much so I never wear a coat to go to work now, it's less than 50 yards from my warm car in the car park to the office so what do I need a coat for?
It's strangely liberating as well. My activities aren't restrained by the clothing I'm wearing. I just do it.

Great example. Thanks for sharing it. You hardly have a “fetish” for the sting of cold, wet weather. But you recognize the value in the endurance and effort.

This may help to explain the multitude of self lockers in our midst.

I feel chastity to be more in line with the principles of Epicureanism, which aims at keeping unnecessary physical desires in check in order to stress the mental pleasures over the physical ones. I regard strict chastity as a form of ataraxia.

    Ormaz,

Interesting point. And while I consider the epicurean sort of the opposite of the stoic, I’m glad you helped to illustrate that chastity goes well beyond what most of us on this site give it credit for.

THIS is excellent discourse. Would most chaste men fall into the epicurean mindset or the stoic? Or another?

I need to more deeply examine my own drives. Thanks to this thread.

Also interesting how Ataraxia seems to be a common thread.

To clarify: It is utterly not for me to say. Only that I agree that serious philosophers of several stripes would have much say.

It may be because we only understand what chastity really is after a long long time of persistent and assiduous practice, Lazlo Toth. Chastity is a learning experience. I don’t think that anyone really knows what they want when they start this journey. Finding out what we really were looking for often coincides with reaching that point of no return in our journey. By that time, the state of ataraxia we’ve attained enables us to embrace it serenely.

    Ormaz,

This reply of yours was probably the most insightful comment I’ve ever heard about chastity.

Thank you for helping me to realize that chastity isn’t just a naughty kink. It can be a very noble way of life.

Today I plan to read more on the concept of Ataraxia.

    Again, thanks.

It’s been literally 40 years since I read the ancient philosophers in any depth (my undergrad major was philosophy) but I can see arguments on all sides of the stoicism/ Epicureanism take on chastity and can add Cynicism and Skepticism to the mix. I think the concept of ataraxia originated with Pyrrho, who traveled to India with Alexander and encountered Buddhism. Ataraxia has always seemed to me a Greek version of nirvana.

Just like in Buddhism, there are different roads to nirvana. The Epicureans saw it as balancing all the appetites so there was not so much hedonic pleasure as to cause pain and the Apollonian pleasures of reason predominated. For the later Stoucs like Aurelius, ataraxia was not letting the work control one’s reactions to it.

A Cynic like Diogenes saw reason and nature as superior to conformity and custom and though we should approach life naturally like a dog.

So, if you stay locked up on your own, you’re a Stoic, if you think a harmonious relationship with a key holder is the way to a happy life you’re an Epicurean. It’s a bit of a stretch, but if you have a PA and want to give up control, you’re a Cynic. ;)

I’ll m so happy you added that last paragraph. I’m somewhat of an ignoramus when it comes to ancient philosophy, so I’m appreciative of the help in applying it to chastity.

Intuitively, your description seems quite apt. I’d call myself a stoic. I’ll recall that Ormaz called himself an epicurean. Does he have a harmonious relationship with a keyholder?

    That’d be fun to know.

”A very noble way of life” may be a little excessive way to characterize chastity, but it certainly is a lot more than a kink. Not that I haven’t tried to convey this hither, but my attempts were rebuffed by the powers that be. As per your definition, I am an Epicurean, but it’s more about finding freedom in constraint than being free from desire. It’s about your KH refiguring your desire towards her own gratification to make it an end in itself, rather than a means to an end.

Your clarity is a gift. I admire that. As well, I find your reasoning and conclusions utterly sound. (Not that my approval matters).

One of the reasons I’m so fascinated here is that I’m trying to have a fully reconciled “theory” about my chastity. I lack full clarity. Hence I fail to convey it well.

But if I were to pursue my current feelings and understandings, I’d start with the stoicism model.

A comprehensive theory is a good goal but there are limits to analysis. Ken Kesey quoted his father as saying “The problem with you, Ken, is you keep trying to unscrew the inscrutable.”

    Welcome :)

We might need to invent a new philosophy for men with their dicks in cages :p

I find the pracrtice of chastity to be a purely mental pursuit, a meditation.

Sometimes I feel like I have read too much and can't decide what anything really is, which is just as well since the world we experience is only a representation and reflection anyway.

When I am complaining about being horny and my GF tells me that she wants to endlessly tease whilst not allowing me to orgasm ever again, she reminds me that what I am going through is merely a mental conundrum, and all I need to do is shuffle some neurons around to experience the sensual onslaught differently.

She is right, of course, and not just because she has the only keys to the cage.

IMO all of the isms and life philosophies will inevitably arrive at the same conclusions, they have all learnt from the others, and they are all different paths up the same mountain.
