We use both, I have a custom 3D printed cage and ring and it uses a barrel lock and a padlock, so I am double locked at all times.

I currently use a pad lock but I worry about the lock rusting internally and failing from water due to showering. Is this a concern others share? Are the padlocks you use waterproof?

The barrel locks are definitely nice from a profile and non-clicking perspective. However, when I googled to buy some of those locks, I got the impression that they basically all used the same key. I only have two bare locks, so I don't know that's a fact, but if the barrel locks for CBs are mass produced and only have one real key cut, that's obviously a problem. I'd love to hear from people who own multiple devices with barrel locks as to whether the keys are identical.

I have 4 barrel locks and 3 of them use the same key, so yeah, if you needed to plan an escape, just order another cage similar to the one you have and there's a good chance that the key will fit. But that being said, I do wonder why all these guys are trying to escape after voluntarily asking to be caged in the first place. Granted, for the few guys where it wasn't their choice, I can understand security being an issue, but for the rest, I don't get it, you signed up for this!

I totally agree. There isn't a device made that you can't escape with a dremel tool. Though I do value the illusion if inescapability, it's definitely an illusion. But another aspect, near and dear to my heart, is simply making it inconvenient. I KNOW I can get out of any chastity device I'm wearing without the key, but the less convenient it is, the less likely I am to cheat myself. Hormones will be hormones, and sometimes a brief lapse of willpower can result in an orgasm that you later regret. For my situation, the more time / expense / inconvenience i have to go through to open the device when I shouldn't, the more likely that "leveler heads will prevail". In the long run, I want to be locked up permanently, without orgasms. In the short run, sometimes it's tough to resist temptation.

With the barrel lock, it uses a standard key that can be made into a nice piece of jewelry. Keys in and of themselves are pretty common jewelry items. If your KH is outwardly vanilla, wearing a normal looking jewelry key is easy to explain.
I’ve not yet seen a security screw key that would be easy to explain if asked about. It doesn’t look exactly like a key. It’s sort of weird looking. It would make my KH a little more uneasy. I have seen them where they look like jewelry and look nice. I’m not saying that. But how does one shrug it off and explain to vanilla people. Now of course I’m assuming the KH doesn’t desire to be out and truthful. I’m sure many here would not mind that. I just know my KH feels comfortable wearing her key and hiding behind the simple and common “it’s the key to his heart” explanation. And that’s much easier when it looks like a key people are used to seeing.

Anyone know if these are harder to pick, or of an alternative that is harder?

All these small locks have just three or four simple pins which aren't too difficult to pick.
Given that a small brass lock isn't strong enough to resist being crushed or split with something as simple as a pair of pinchers or open ended spanners, there's not much point in manufacturers making the locking mechanism any more secure.

One way to go to make them more secure for a keyholder is to add some sort of seal that shows if the lock has been tampered with.

    Neither! Snap-in-seal for us!

Before that, barrel lock every time.

Thanks for the info. I have not tried Mature Metal's security screw option.

I use a padlock. The cages with barrel locks have always been a pain to get the cage seated properly on the base ring, lining up pins and such without severely pinching sensitive skin!

My Mistress likes the sound of the padlock and ownership tag jingling when I walk, especially in public places.

My KH prefers 2 locks, but it is harder to hide under clothes

I don’t have much experience with barrel locks, having only received a device with a barrel lock this past Monday! So far my experience with installing the lock is not entirely positive. It seems everything has to be lined up perfectly to get it in. Once locked it does seem secure! I can see that a hole drilled through it for a security seal could be useful.
The padlock on my Custom Chastity Leopard is quite secure as well. It does not make any noise as it is designed to be in a shackle when locked. It does not show in my panties anymore than the barrel does in my newer device.
