New Design Key Blanks

    I wanted additional options for keys so I set out to designed a small key blank which looks more like a charm than a pad lock key.

    I spent some time creating a key blank 3D print files, purchasing different stealth cylinder and key sets to make sure the blank worked. I developed 3 different key blanks with different heads and used the casting service from the original post who can create them in different materials and drop ship to the buyer.

    The challenge is getting the key cut to match the original. I had to use an actual locksmith who hand cut the key and not use a machine.

    Your designs look very nice. Good job.
    One suggestion - make them available on Shapeways in “fine detail polished silver” which seems a bit nicer than just the polished silver. While I can’t compare the two, the DIY key I made was in the fine detail version and the quality is fantastic.

    I like the design and petite size of the heart key. Im really tempted to make another key. Thinking of doing it in silver and if that works out, going all in on gold. BUT, i don’t really have the time now, so will have to bookmark this idea and come back to it at a later date.

    One question, even with the small size, I presume the actual operational portion of the key is the same size as the original key in length, width, height, is that correct?

    Yes, the key is the same as the master key that inserts into the lock. I really just reduced the length and replaced the key head.

    Have been thinking about this since you posted. I couldn't resist. Just ordered the heart key in fine detail polished silver. Thinking valentines gift. Will post an update when completed. Delivery date estimate was near the end of January, but all my experience with Shapeways is usually a little sooner than what they estimate.

    Oops I purchased two on accident (marry Jane is cruel)...
