Tons of excellent content can be found on this channel, but I thought this video in particular was rather intriguing. I find this to be a fascinating social concept that seems to have supporting evidence everywhere you turn. We humans truly are complex, seemingly impossible creatures.

I won't attempt to summarize here, as I've included the author's original (and highly efficient) description below. Enjoy!

    ---

How good are you with money? What about reading people’s emotions? How healthy are you, compared to other people you know? Knowing how our skills stack up against others is useful in many ways. But psychological research suggests that we’re not very good at evaluating ourselves accurately. In fact, we frequently overestimate our own abilities. David Dunning describes the Dunning-Kruger effect.

The more ignorant someone is, the less aware they are of what they don’t know.

The mind is truly amazing. I was watching brain games, where they displayed a picture and then took that photo away. Then asked what color the grass was. I was positive it was green. Positive. The photo was black and white. When given a limited amount of time, our brains anticipates certain things and fills in the blanks. The same worked with reading. It showed a long paragraph that if you read quickly made sense, but if you closely looked at it, it was a hodgepodge of words and our brain quickly picks out the relevant ones and fills in the rest.

Interesting. In some areas, I feel the exact opposite -- "impostor syndrome," where I feel like I've somehow fooled others into believing I'm better than I actually am.

I think Dunning-Kruger actually explains how competent people sometimes have less confidence in their abilities for similar reasons.
