I'm pretty new to trying anal stuff, and I was hoping for a good toy that's small, but preferably one that vibrates. Any recommendations?

Maybe start with a set of plugs like this
It's not overly expensive, and can act as insurance against getting one that is the wrong size.
...and who knows you might want to size up before too long anyway :p

It really depends on what type of anal play you are wanting to try out.

A butt plug is a good toy for getting used to having something back there, you insert it and leave it be, allowing your body to become accustomed to the feeling of something in your ass. Its not necessarily an active toy (as in thrusting in/out) but think of it as a first step. Look for one that is around 3.5 - 4.5 inch in circumference (under about 1.5 inch diameter). You can get vibrating plugs in beginner friendly sizes to add a bit more stimulation.

You can also look at prostate massagers, these tend to have a curved look to them as they are designed to put pressure against your prostate. They probably look more intimidating than a standard teardrop shape plug and the end tends to be bulbous, but they aren't scary to insert. Again, available in vibrating or not and look for bulg no larger than 3.5 circumference to begin with (the bulb is usually the widest part and is at the start of the plug, so you have to be able to accommodate the diameter straight away),.

If you are looking for thrusting, then you can't go past the humble dildo, available in a variety of sizes, materials and looks. As with a butt plug, you really don't want to go much larger than 3.5-4.5 circumference initially. You can also get vibrating versions.

Always make sure that any anal toy has a flared base to stop it being sucked up into your backside.
Use plenty of lube and lube designed for anal play. It tends to be thicker than normal lube and lasts longer.
Don't use silicone lube with silicone toys

Beware, it can be quite addictive and is unlikely to be long before you are looking to try something bigger and better. You'll be quite surprised just how much your ass can stretch and the size toy you find "comfortable"......

I second the recommendation from @Alana for SquarePegToys. I really like the Egg Plug series in SuperSoft silicone. Problems I had with comfort and longer term wear disappeared. I don’t think the smaller ones are very expensive.

I am using ID Millennium silicone lubricant.

this is perfect advice, I always start with a plug, to relax the muscles, then work my way up through the other toys/dildos.

As a beginner you want a fairly small plug or you're going to have difficulty inserting it, plus you don't want to be stretching yourself that much to start with. As @NZSenator said, make absolutely sure the plug has a flared base, the last thing you want is it ending up inside and having some embarrassing explaining to do at A&E.

The Egg that @Peter Rabbit suggested is good, price is reasonable for the smaller ones and it is very comfortable. I have the medium but that would be too big to start with, so go for the small.

As an alternative to silicone, I also prefer glass plugs to steel. Glass warms up quicker and is easy to clean. You can buy a decent glass plug with a large flared base for about £25.

Lastly you don't want to wear it too much to start with, your body has to get used to it, so small sessions is advised.

I agree with the glass plugs, they feel great and have a certain weight to them that makes them a little different too.

I was quite worried about the plug being made from glass at first, I was thinking "what if it shatters?" But its so durable it could be a deadly weapon in the wrong hands. :)

I think I’m the fourth to recommend the SquarePeg plugs. Having found them not that long ago, they’re the best plugs I’ve found and quickly became my favorites. My favorite is the blunt plug:
    https://www.squarepegtoys.com/shop/blunt-plug/

And some advice on plugs, read these two:
    https://www.google.com/amp/s/squirrelmunk.com/2017/12/30/general-butt-plug-recommendations/amp/

    https://squirrelmunk.com/2017/11/26/the-elements-of-good-butt-plug-design/

These were enlightening reading for me. And the reason why I like the blunt plug is the low bulb to neck ratio leads to an easier time removing the plug, which has been a source of anxiety after wearing for awhile.

Hehehe I know what you mean, I had visions of a video I’d seen with a glass jar shattering:0) once you get over it, you’d pick good quality glass any time (well I would)

The best first toy is your bosses fancy fountain pen. Don't forget to put it back.

I thought it was your ex's toothbrush, I stand corrected ;)

In seriousness though, you want to avoid any material that retains bacteria (rubber for example) as they are impossible to keep clean / hygienic. look for silicone (and quality silicone - medical grade), glass or metal
