Just wondering if anyone knows if the standard intergrated lock keys can be cut to a smaller size by a regular key cutter service. Thanks. See (safe) image for example.
No. Most can not because the key is too small. There is a 3d printed key blank necklace on shape ways that everyone says just take it to a locksmith but I tried. I actually brought it to 7 locksmiths. They all said not a chance. I think these were designed by Josie Lynn on here but that name doesn’t sound quite right and if it wasn’t for a long couple days of sailing and the bottom of a whiskey bottle, I might have done better remembering. I ended up using a file with the 3d printed key and it came out great. Took about 10-15 minutes of patience but came out fine.
That's a pitty locksmiths can't do it.. Those keys are ugly as sin. I was hoping to replace the key for a more regular looking one for herself to wear either on a necklace or on a charm bracelet or simply to look like a regular key. And yeah Josie Lynn does lots of 3d printing so I think I know what your talking about. Thanks anyway. I guess case closed on this one.
Oh and I'm aware of the fancy key jewellery maker that's on twitter. all being hand made but no way at the asking price. https://chastity-shop.com/
A while ago I made a posting for a DIY silver key project. The link is below. This might be of interest to you based on your request. It’s the 3D printed key designed by Josie Lynn referenced above and a method to DIY file it. https://www.chastitymansion.com/forums/index.php?threads/silver-key-diy-project.35022/
any locksmith can cut any key. Most don't like cutting non-standard keys and they do have to have a blank to work from. If you can find a blank that will fit in the keyway of a lock, and provide that lock and the original with the blank, they usually will work with you. They don't want to be liable for the key not working after they cut it from the blank, so, having the lock or lock core with you usually will lead to a more successful visit! That said... The chinese "BDSM" or other style keys are hideous, yes, but you would have a hard time finding a blank in another design... If you find something even really close and it does fit in the keyway, you'll be better off... One idea that 'might' work would be if the original happens to be 'shaped' so it could be shortened, it's just a matter of the locksmith putting the key further down the vice and cutting the same 'end'... Not all the cheap keys that come with these style locks have that in mind so it's 'shape' is just at the end...... I swear, though, there's enough of an interest in this that 'someone' could have a couple styles forged in bulk and get a fairly decent price for them in return!
The alternative if you don't mind a little DIY is to cut off the operating part of the key and fit it to the tab of an ornate key. The two parts can be epoxy resined together. If you drill a small hole in the operating key shaft before cutting it (the hole ending up at the end of the part you will keep) then it'll give a good grip for the glue. Keys made for locks in furniture often have ornate tabs that are suitable. eg: http://ancientpoint.com/inf/77137-1..._cabinet_keys_antique_barrle_barrel_keys.html Cut the ornate part short and you might need to cut a slot in the resulting end in which to insert the operating part. Those where the shank is a hollow tube will likely be easier to cut and fit together.
