It's true, without piercing or a urethral insert, it's easy enough for him to slip out from such "ball trap devices" fairly easily. You can test for this yourself if you wait until he's showered and then pinch the skin at the base of the penis by the top of the "A" ring and pull it firmly up and away from the ring/device. You will most likely find that you can pull his member out completely leaving only his testes firmly attached between ring and tube. By means of a simple snug fitting metal ring that will render any secret pulling out and playing impossible.
