I am a science guy I always have been since school. Nowadays my company earns its money with creating an AI and offering its service to pharma companies.

When you are into this kind of work the question about god and morality is inevitable.

So do I believe in god ? Jein.
But lets rephrase his question as the term "god" - at least to me - is in some way always connected to "religion".
Do I believe in god as represended by one of the (major) religions ? Certainly not !
They al made made a mess of things at a poins and mosts religions still do - no matter whether you look at christian churches , muslims, jews or hindus. In a sociological way it is understandable where their beliefs and holybooks come from, but to now I yet have find a religion that is into humanism and actually acts accordingly.

If I do not believe in religion as presented by some church, do I believe that there is a god or some for of greater beeing ? Yes I do.

Why ? Because humans are idiots and do not learn from their errors. ;)
Hundrets of years ago the creation story and god was a good way to explain a lot of things due to the lack of science or the knowledge evolution. Today we know a lot more however some things are still hard to explain. F.e. due to math and the evolution theory the creation of live on earth or the galaxy - given the right circumstances - is quite likely. But in this case we are talking about single cell organisms. What is the likelyhood that humankind might evolve and survive its early stages up to what it is today ? Lets say that it is way less unlikely than Elvis being still alive and comeing back to claim Elon Musk as the saviour of humankind !
So yes - god - or some other greater beeing - is still a good explanation when science is lacking answers. ;)

But one questions to all those strict non believers I did not see here so far: If there is no god you have noting to gain, but what what might you have to loose if there is some god ?
The series billionaire broached the issue in a fun way: Care to sign a contract where you sell your soul for a dollar ?-)

Which god is being asked about? There are thousands of gods I don't believe in.
FWIW I think the last option listed is misphrased, I'd have said someone who states 'i know there is no god' would be an anti-theist rather than atheist. Maybe someone already made that point...

That's a lot of words just to say that your knowledge is limited and so you believe in fairy tales to plug the gaps, just like cave dwelling knuckledraggers who experienced an eclipse and killed their virgins in order to appease the sun god.

    "science guy", lol.

It always circles back to I believe just in case it would seem. Is your god so stupid not to know you're hedging your bets?

By calling someone an idiot, your mask slipped and your intolerance shines like a beacon.

For the record, Einstein believed in God. I suppose that means he believed in fairy tales. I'll take Einstein as my science guy any day.

Did your god tell you that while you were wanking praying to him?

The closest he got was being a pantheist, lol.

Now you're changing the question. He believed in God. No where was the question about a personal God. Or an active God for that matter. We've talked about that before. God is different things to different people. But he believed in a creator. You are claiming that is not scientific and a fairy tale.

Oh, and for the record. I no longer jerk-off.

He also proposed multiverse theory. As in multiple universes so multiple creators and multiple versions of us. So he was kinda out there fantasy wise despite being a great scientist.

Ok - to be clear: Whome did I call an idiot and why exactly would that be a sign for intolerance?

For my part this thread seemed to be an interesting off-topic discussion so far where you can post you opinion and discuss the topic and discuss the topic with like- and different-minded people.
I have no problem with someone taking different positions, where I will get a problem though is if someone tris do demean my position and / or faith without any real argumentation as you did.

Therefore I will report this thread. Maybe some mods can help to keep it more civil...

Although I mostly agree with your desire for civility, I prefer that it not be reported. We're big boys (or sissys) and things haven't gotten too out of hand. I don't mind a bit of "hot-collared" responses. I like to save reporting things to the truly egregious responses.

Always amuses me when the people of faith speak against intolerance. Being they're the most intolerant usually.

That is a misnomer. And as ridiculous as yesterday's post:
The both of you essentially search out examples where religious people are human with human failings and then extrapolate that failing to endemic to all religions. What it shows is a deep rooted bigotry, no different than saying, "all *** people are pedophiles".

I get that you desperately want intelligent people in your group in order to increase the average IQ, but you're clutching at straws by trying to tag Albert as one of you. He wasn't, get over it.

But, I agree, god does exist. I'm sitting right here. Debate over.

No it's fact. Organized religion is all hell and eternal damnation. Sounds pretty intolerant to me.

Why report when you can pray for help?

Anyway, reporting is just you being intolerant...I wonder if you are an intolerant idiot.

It seems you like to twist responses. True, you probably don't recall everything I've said on this thread, but Einstein's view of God is very aligned with my own:
I learned to read early on in my life, so I'm usually pretty good at interpreting words. Einstein very much believed in God. If you look back on my posts:
In the above post, I say we don't know what God is. I mention that there are still many unanswered questions. Any one of those questions may (or may not) be answered by the existence of a God.

In that post I say that it is not important what you believe. what is important is how you live. So stop putting words in my mouth. It makes you seem like you hold animous.

So why is so important if you believe in a god or gods as long as you're living a decent moral life? Why is an atheist destined for hell if they're living morally upright lives?

First, the thread is not about organized religion. It's simply about whether God exists. Get off your soapbox and stop spewing your bigotry. You take something you heard from some preacher about eternal damnation and extrapolate that to all religions and all people who believe in religion. That reveals an intolerance that you have that is equal to the intolerance you abhor. There are estimates that there are over 4000 religions being practiced in the world today. Have you studied all 4000 of them? And you've concluded they all are intolerant? Wow. Who'd of thunk that.

You have an issue with a few passages of some religions. I have the same issue to be honest. One of the posts I just quoted lays out at least my philosophy that an atheist is not destine for hell. (If in fact there is a heaven an hell). I'd also claim that my interpretation is consistent with the Bible. But then again, I tend to read the Bible with very liberal eyes.

The bible literally says believe in me and obey or rot in hell. How many ways can that be interpreted exactly?
