Think I’m allergic - What is weld material used for SS cages?

I started with plastic CB6000, followed by Holy Trainer. Then I tried some cheap “Stainless” knock off cages from China. I liked the way metal felt, but would get a rash after wearing more than 3-4 days. I assumed cheap stainless knock off was the problem - right?!

I purchased a MM JAILBIRD, and I absolutely love it fit and comfort. Problem is if I wear it longer than a week again I start to get a itchy rash.

before you jump to conclusion of hygiene, I shower good every day, and can wear my HT for a month with no issues. Therefore I am back in the HT while we have a beautiful Jailbird just sitting in a drawer.

I have read about Nickel allergies, but I don’t get a rash everywhere the cage is touching. Could it be the weld material causing the problem?

I suggest calling MM, as they have likely heard and seen it all.

Following. I just ordered a custom SS cage (it hasn't arrived it) because I had the same problem with a cheap one. Hooe I don't have issues with the new one.

Skin can react to any metal. Some more than others. Don’t be too shocked NOR too disappointed if you just get a reaction.

For me, I can’t wear metal watch bands. I’ve had titanium, silver, stainless, all gave me a rash.

Not all stainless steel is created equal. Many stainless steels contain nickel; which is frequent culprit for.causing skin irritation and allergies. Surgical implant grade stainless steel (LV316) is nickel free and almost never reactive. Titanium is very biocompatible but anodization processes and different grades can contain irritation inducing impurities. Platinum and palladium are the least reactive metals, but a cage made from them would be ludicrously expensive.

I have no issue with my titanium watch band.

Not at all. But I do get tired of the “only my experience matters” responses. Why do you seek the wise counsel of others only to dismiss it impolitely?

    Consider that a rhetorical question.

It sounds like it could be an allergy, will be interesting to hear what MM say.

Most stainless steel welding performed by people who know uses matching filler wire, so the same chemical composition so you would think that there is no issue. However, with StSt welding you can get other issues during the welding where the some of the chromium reacts with the carbon in the steel forming chromium carbides. Therefore, the remainder of the weld metal is low in chromium the protective oxide may not form correctly which increases the amount of nickel that is available a the surface. I am not a metallurgist and may not have explained this exactly but working in the chemical industry with corrosive fluids I have seen StSt equipment corrode at welds because the welds is slightly different to the parent material and had this explained to me. If someone has an easily set off nickel allergy this effect which is of no concern to most people may be having some effect.

That is exactly what I was thinking and glad to hear this information. I am planning to get tested and see if I’m allergic to nickel. Thanks for the insight.

    Maybe try chr
Maybe test yourself on chrome also.
I had difficulties with a chinese cage some months ago. Couldnt wear a device for 3 months.
I had this device about 1 1/2 years and never any issues. An Allergy can show up when ever it wants.
Or it is a different legierung.

The irritation evolved when it got hotter and I wore the cage for longer periods. So maybe it also was a reaction between the acids and the chrome.

Now I am wearing cages which arent too cheap in material and it got away. No issues in this direction.
