After years of not doing so I now find that the more snug the fit the more effective when it comes to controlling erections, spontaneous leakage and ejaculating whether that be someway between a large but accidental leak or a ruined orgasm.

Just be carful with your choice of A-ring (base ring) size if appropriate. You don't want anything turning black and dropping off ... well not if its unplanned.

As for which device to buy.. try some of the inexpensive ...well less expensive chinese ones .. some are direct or near copies, find one you like then if you want seek out the sometimes better quality original nearest to the one you like.

If you have a partner be sure to involve her in the aesthetics of what ever devices you are looking at. Bear in mind unless you are very hard of understanding if she thinks its ugly .. then IT IS ugly and don't get one of those .

What @filltee said. You don’t want room to grow so a cage that is 1-1.5” is what you want. I’m in the same boat as you so I found a device on dhgate that I currently wear. It’s a metal cage that has bars spiraling from the end and secures with a screw vs a lock. I had a tighter base ring but had problems with gap distance and pain when an erection started. I now have a larger ring, one most people on here would say is too big. But it works perfect for me.

I have spent a fair bit on brand name devices (Vice, Bon4) but personally like the fit, feel and ease of putting on/off of the dhgate cage the best.

 

I’d go with a holy trainer Nano.

 

I'm in the same boat. I had a CB6000s and it was way too big when I was flaccid. I'm currently wearing an inexpensive, made-in-China steel one that I bought on eBay several years ago. I think its cage was claimed to be something like 36mm and it is just slightly longer than my most relaxed length. Most of the time I'm pushed up against the bars, but it's not painful because it's too short to support a true erection. I used to get far more discomfort from longer cages in which my penis would get partially erect and then be stopped by the cage.

One amusing side effect of the very short cage is that I greatly appreciate being able to achieve an erection when my wife releases me, so much so that it is nearly as good as being permitted to cum. Therefore, she can "reward" me with an erection accompanied by some T&D and I don't object of that much when she locks me back up without permitting me an orgasm!

 

@OscartheTurtle - do you have a picture or a link for your choice of cage? I would prefer a screw.

 

Is the gap small? I need a small gap as my balls tend to slip through? How does this work when you turtle?

 

Gap is pretty small. Especially as you go smaller in base ring size. Where some standard devices like the Vice Mini, I will have the little guys escape with their largest ring on, I wear a 50mm ring with this metal cage and have never had an escape. With the 45mm ring you easily feel the base ring through the scrotum if you feel directly between the cage and base ring. I’ll attach the 45mm base ring and take a picture of the gap with my finger in there to give you some perspective.

As for turtling, I have not had a turtling issue when wearing this cage. Everything is sufficiently held/supported that the little guy doesn’t go into hiding on me.

My biggest complaint with this device is when I pee. It is never a clean affair. The tightness between the cage and base ring (gap) can make it a bit more challenging to clean up. So be prepared to take it off occasionally for a good cleaning.
