    I’m not quite sure I follow, how does that prevent turtling?

    This is roughly the arrangement, with the tube part ending well before the crown:

    That seems to be the sweet spot.

    Giving the head plenty of room seems to avoid triggering turtling, which is probably a defence mechanism. Perhaps, also, the edge stops the penis from starting to rear back.

    And, when shrinking and turtling do occur, that line is about as far as the head can withdraw, so it doesn't get "stuck in the barrel" when it grows again.
