Yes, putting them is tricky. Getting the holes in the locking post and the cage flange to line up properly can be a royal pain in the ass. It could be made pretty easy if the locking post was square instead of round, because it couldn’t twist, and all you’d have to manage is inserting the pin to the proper depth.

My Queen likes the small Abus lock for the look and ease of use.

a typical barrel lock, but only because that's the lock that came with the (metal) device. i don't particularly care for the barrel lock design because they're difficult to unlock without the key.

I use a security screw and nothing will ever convince me to use anything else! The screw securely attaches the cage to the ring, making it like one single piece of metal. With a padlock there is always a little give, a little jiggle. Not with the screw. Nothing moves at all! And there's no extra bulk either. It's nice!

Have used plastic tags, padlock and the small barrel locks over the year's
We prefer the barrel lock now just for the low profile it gives
Never had any problems with it over the year's and we lead a very active life

I have tried many different cages, for me the best and most effective, secure, and comfortable is a simple inverted device. It is inexpensive and keeps everything locked away and out of sight, no see, no touch, no play,
It is attached with security screws and a waist belt and without the proper took it is impossible to remove.

I’ve been using a tamper proof metal numbered security seal for mine. There’s no way to remove without it being immediately obvious (the tags are individually numbered and the cable frays as soon as it’s cut and specs say it’ll withstand 450kg of force) - and there’s no moving parts so no problem with getting them wet etc. Plus it’s pretty hot feeling the cable thread through the tag and knowing it’s not coming off without cutting it off.

We used to use the classic padlock but moved to a security screw once things got real and she kept me locked more and more. It keeps things well camouflaged so there’s no worries about any odd bulges in my pants. I can even swim caged (not that I have much of a choice).

My inverted cage is locked with security screws, there is no way to remove it without the proper tool that I do not have. The device is very small, very secure, and most comfortable. There is no way to play with the little clitty, it is totally compressed into my body. I cannot see it, play with it, or remove the device. KH is in total control.

I now have a London Tower with the security screw which I much prefer to the barrel lock on my previous cages. I do not like padlocks because they are bulky although I understand the erotism of closing them.

I must be lucky I have not had an issue with the cheap chinese integrated locks but then I havnt been using them as long as you. I think that style are the best over all but a decent make like the burgwachter not had an issue.

I also like the plastic tags but I find the numbers rub off after a week or two.

I like the idea of padlocks but they are too bulky with pointy corners!

I have never used a security screw but I ordered a mature metal jailbird with a security screw and it should arrive this week. I hope it’s as secure as they say and I like the idea that if I don’t have the key, there is no way of getting it off without destroying a very expensive device. I really like the idea of a cage that I can’t get out of without being released and that being locked up is not a choice.

padlocks look impressive, but they are not very convenient for permanent use.

I've not tried to break out of mine without the key. I suppose you could maybe use some small tools to wedge in and start unlocking the screw, but it would take some work. For the most part, it is pretty secure. There have been a few times where the screw has worked itself loose. Just make sure to tighten it when you put it on and you should be fine.

Used padlocks up till now beside a barrel lock in my first cheap amazon device. It's just what came with my cages and I liked bolt cutters and snip problem solved in an emergency. New device is a barrel lock again and I do like the sleeker look. I miss and don't miss the bolt cutter solution at same time.
