Thanks for sharing... I'd not seen a post about this before. Most interesting! Looks like it was based on the old medieval torture instrument, "the pear", only with a detachable handle. I'd wondered about how to make lockable plugs before and never come up with a good design. A key-release air valve on an inflatable plug wouldn't really do the job because inflatable plugs can pop in and out easy enough when lubricated. I had been thinking of a rather more hygienic design than this one, using a layer or squishy elastomer between a hard tip and a hard base. The tip and base would be brought closer together with a screw thread, compressing the elastomer axially but letting it expand radially. The whole thing could be silicone encased, but I think it would be tricky to get enough expansion to actually make the thing hard to remove.

This device on the other hand looks quite practical, and if not exactly 100% safe, at least easy to remove in an emergency. Shouldn't be overly complex to machine one either; I do believe I have a project for next year...
