I recently started wearing a resin cage with a brass barrel lock full time. My work requires that I go through metal detectors when visiting some clients. This means I have to carry a key and remove the lock, then insert a ziptie in its place. Honor system at play here. I don't like this because it leaves play in the device and my scrotum slips out. Not to mention the hassle of having to find a public restroom to do this. I've even had to do it in my car a couple of times.
Any good totally metal free devices out there?
I'd love to hear your stories of getting caught by metal detectors too.

Have you tried just wearing it through? It doesn’t seem like the amount of brass in a cylinder lock would set off a metal detector.

If you want to try it without risking embarrassment, put the lock in your pocket and neglect to take it out next time you go through the detector. If it goes off, you’ll just have to make sure your pockets are empty and go through again. Then at least you’ll know.

There’s nothing too much to say about getting “caught”. I’ve been wanded, both as primary security and because I set off the walk through detector, and either my belt buckle has been blamed or I have told them I’m wearing body jewelry. No one has been interested in knowing more than that.

In the past I’ve worn my base ring through airport security. Sometimes it’s beeped and sometimes not. More recently, since I’m taking off the cage anyway, I just take off the whole thing and put it in my carry on, then put it back on after I’m through. I think if I traveled more often I might try leaving it on so as not to have to use my emergency key. But I only fly 2 or 3 times a year so it’s really not a big deal.

I’ve been through the full body scanner with this one. No issues. It has a brass lock. Good luck!!

It takes a certain amount of metal to set them off. Otherwise zippers and all sorts of jewelry would set them off almost every time. If the brass barrel lock would set it off, so would a zipper. I wouldn’t worry about it.

My 316L stainless Contender and Glansarmor have not tripped the detectors.

There are plastic versions of that cylinder lock. It’s less secure but it might work for you. There also a 3D printed version they twists to line up holes to insert a plastic numbered seal.

    Thanks for all the replies.
In going to try leaving the lock in my pocket next time and see if the walk through and the wand find it.
I know the wand beeps at my zipper pull, snaps on my jacket and even my knee replacement.
If that doesn't work I will look into the plastic cylinders and the silicone cages.
    Thanks again everyone.

    Update:

This morning while wearing my resin cage with zipties walking through the detector was uneventful.
But, the Garret wand DID find the lock in my pocket. I was careful to pick a pant without any rivets and put the lock in a lower leg pocket away from anything that might also be metal.
Zipties work for now but plastic locks or a different cage are in my future.

Bummer. But at least now you know, and it’s cool that there are some plastic lock options available.

... another solution is when wearing the cage, wear trousers that have a metal zip and rivets that does set off the wand.

When travelling my wife locks me in this .... pure plastic, never had a problem with any airport or security scanner.

Just leave the lock in place, if it does go off they will just assume it’s the zip on your trousers, I didn’t have any issues going through the detectors at a court when I was a witness.
