Sometimes she'll ask me to lock up when she's feeling dominant. Sometimes I'll ask to be locked when I'm feeling submissive. At the moment I think she initiates a little more than me.

It ends when I'm allowed to cum, if she's in the mood for a change. She'll decide when I'm allowed to cum. Sometimes afterward the cage stats off and we just drift into being a vanilla couple for a little while. Sometimes afterward she'll tell me to lock back up.

Unlocking...
I never ask to be unlocked unless there's a health issue. I promised her that a few years ago, and have never broken that promise.
If we're going somewhere like an airport or an event and there's the chance of a secuity search, then my wife might unlock me for it. I tend not to worry if I'm on my own, but she gets quite self-concious if there's the possibility of it being discovered when we're together.

Locking...
As being locked up is my "normal", once whatever reason for being unlocked is over, then at the next opportunity I just put it back on again, no need for her to ask me, she's happier when I'm locked, so I do it for her.
If it's convenient for her to turn and take the key, then I offer it to her, something that very often happens after I've laid the table for breakfast, before I sit down to eat. It always makes her smile, otherwise I just leave the key where she will find it and she always quickly hides it.

That's the quickest way to make wearing your device your normal, is to always do that, just put it on without ceremony as soon as is practical. Not asking to be unlocked is the other way to make it your normal. If being locked is your desired normal, why do you ask to be unlocked? Enjoy the denial and submissiveness of not being the one asking to be unlocked!
Getting to the position of it being your defacto normal is a mindset change you both have to go through. You both have to want and expect it. Neither of you have to ask. You know what you want, just do it!

We are very similar. I'm only unlocked for grooming about once every 10-17 days.

I asked about a trip up north for some "winter sports". She declined because it's not really her "thing" anymore. She offered to let me go by myself but I would need to be caged with no key.
