If you have a table mounted grinder, you could grind it down to the right level to be even with the cylindrical lock receptacle.

I just used a set of needle files and then several grades of wet & dry paper. I also added a small blob of lead-free solder on the right hand edge of the 'flag' of the lock which makes sure the lock pin is kept all the way into the hole. This makes sure the stresses are all taken on the body of the lock. If you don't do this the pivot of the flag can be taking the shear force at the left hand end of the lock.

    Hi,
Newbie (to this forum) here. Would you consider ordering an extra lock before having a go at your current one? I own two cages, both with these type of integrated locks and needed to soften the edges. First attempt, using a method similar to gyrator53 (minus the solder blob), resulted in an explosion of lock parts all over the table. I guess they're pretty cheaply made. Luckily, I had the other lock as well, and very carefully managed to sand and buff the edges to a usable finish. No issues now at all .
    Cheers.

Yes, there is not a lot of material around the pin retaining pegs (and I notice from the two cages I have that they differ in detain in this area (the usual Chinese uniformity!) I reckon the application of some Loctite to those pegs would be good but you would need to be careful not to glue the whole lock up solid.

I don't have any power tools, and I don't want to buy some for a 2$ lock

Can you describe the sanding process in more detail i.e. the grit of the paper you used and any notes on the process you might have

I used a dremel to round the corners and edge -- No more pointy issues

My lovely wife rode the cage for what felt like hours last night without the slightest discomfort - to her that is :)

Hey ... just some 600 wet/dry and some carefully applied elbow grease. I left the lock in the cage for better stability (I was out of chastity while doing this), which helped me judge how much 'softening' I needed to do. I see that somewhere else online someone used a bit of rubber coating, like they use in electrical work. I bet that works great, unless you want to unlock at some point.

So I bought a WEN Dremel and I have no idea what attachments to use- I have polishing wheels, diamond encrusted burrs, grinding stones, cut-off wheels, sanding discs, dressing stone, drum sander, and mandrels. What do I do

Edges only, keep checking the fit as often as possible. Go slow, and whatever you do, don't say "Just a little bit more"......

A fine file or buffing wheel. Just the smallest amount, and check the fit so you dont go too far.

I just lay the wet paper down on the kitchen counter, dribble a couple drops of water, and carefully sand the edge down on it in a circular and figure eight motion. Easy peasy
