The men who put the "Great" in Great Britain. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b084l09x/the-last-miners-episode-2

If you can watch this without sharing a tear, you have 1, never worked underground 2, never worked in an environment where you relied on colleagues to survive each and every shift or 3, you have no emotions. Do I miss working underground, hell No, but I do miss my work mates, F*ck yes I do, and I left 17 years ago to work in the Health and Safety Industry to make working conditions better for every day workers! Good luck to the lads :)

I did watch this and felt very sad for the miners. I know that many of them had been miners for many years. After the programme I was thinking that if a man works for a great length of time in a job that creates a friendship with his workmates then it doesn't seem to matter how dreadful the conditions might be, he will still miss the work. I have even heard of convicts being released and missing prison.

Very Sad. I can´t watch it because the bbc-player only works in UK. The screen note tells me so :(
But I know a little bit about mining and the working conditions then and now. I once was visiting a museum, where I saw scary things from the beginnings over medieval to the industrial mining of the 20th century. Plus I have a very good business friend living in the Alps. Some years ago he invited me and my family for a look behind the scene in a salt mine there while they were working. Of course it is a modern mine. Brightly, ventilated tunnels, big enough to stand upright where ever you are. But the stuffy smell of the air, the overall existing moisture, muggy clime, the infernal machine noise..... It lets you get imagination what kind of work this once must have been! And salt mining is shurely much, much less dirty than coal mining.

Yes, it definitely needs a special (and die out?) kind of men and mates!
