Just curious what people across the country, or even the globe like to drink when they need something a little stiff.

I absolutely love Canadian rye whiskey, Alberta Premium is my choice of drink when I can get it. Most of the time I buy Pendleton Canadian rye because it's the best choice available to me. Either brand is incredibly smooth and very forgiving when it comes to hangovers :)

My KH only allows me to drink beer or wine with no questions, when I want. She noted I was drinking too much hard liquor for Her liking. So when I submitted control to Her, I agreed to only drink hard liquor with Her permission. I almost never ask about hard liquor anymore because I know the answer is no. When she allows me to have a drink, She offers it, and it is a privilege or special occasion. This is one of the few rules I have broken in the past and She has tanned my ass hard for it. But if allowed, I go for Bourbon. Makers Mark or something similar, on the rocks, or with a splash of ginger ale. Cheers !!:p

Johnnie Walker Gold is the only liquor I drink besides beer. I used to drink the black but the gold is much smoother. Of course I’d love to drink the blue but it’s way to much.

For the record I keep a bottle of George Dickel barrel select, Laphroaig 10 year cask strength, and Balcones Texas single malt in my cabinet at all times.

I don't drink a lot of hard alcohol. If I do I usually go for jack Daniels single barrel or knob Creek.

LOL - don't hold back with such a valued insight! Agreed. :)

Well I did until I got some of their Gran Reserva. The first one I got was with held in Cuban Rum casks so was not allowed into the US at the time - all the more for us :) The second is now "Caribbean" rum casks.

Anyone interested in Scottish Malts should enjoy reading Raw Spirit - In Search of the Perfect Dram by the late Iain Banks in 2003/4. An interesting book with a surprising ending.

I tend to favour the smoky flavour of any Islay Malt and my wife loves Lagavullin. Heading there for a holiday later this year at the Bowmore distillery ;)

I just got two variations of Shackleton blended malt and they are very drinkable - in small measures of course ;)

Disclaimer - There are other forms of whisky available from many places other than Scotland - apparently :p

(There's a few members here I know might have chipped in - one favouring a Welsh distillation certainly. Hopefully they wil chip in their thoughts :) )

When we first moved to Spain we decided to try DYC, a Spanish whisky. It was vile, after one glass it was relegated to BBQ starter fuel. Undeterred, we bought the DYC “good one” which cost a lot more. There was one huge difference... the price!

I was coming to this part of the site to ask just this question, and just the way that you asked it. I love whisk(e)y; only other inanimate thing I love as much is great coffee and beer. I'm sorry but I have to name much more than one. For single malts, I love several. Favorites would be Ardbeg Corryvreckan and 10, Port Charlotte Islay Barley, and Laphroaig 10 cask strength. For bourbon, Elijah Craig 12 was my favorite daily sipper when that heavenly piss of Dionysus used to be available. But my all time favorite is either Blanton's or Booker's (try the Little Book if you haven't). For rye, James E Pepper cask strength, regular James E Pepper, Rittenhouse, and Pikesville are all necessities. For Irish, I love Connemara. Favorite Canadians are 40 Creek Copper Pot, and Crown Northern Harvest, but I've heard wonderful things about Lot 40 and Alberta Rye. Initially, I went crazy over craft beer, and then I found whisk(e)y. Now I am polyamorous lol. Fortunately I got the wife completely into all the whiskies but the peat monsters. However, these days she's even coming around to those too. She will occasionally sip a little Talisker Storm, Lagavulin 16, or Caol Ila 12. She still can't come around to Ardbeg or Laphroaig, but she loves all the same craft beers I do.

Try some Kilchoman Machir Bay if you haven't. It's utterly delicious for such a young whisky.

Charleston, what do you think of Dickel 12 compared to the Barrel Select? I've wanted to try the Barrel Select for a while, but I only ever had the 12. I've had a few Jack Daniels SBs gotten from purchases of barrels with friends at the distillery, but I'm ashamed to say I've not tried the Dickel Barrel Select.

I am by no means a connoisseur, I’ve only been drinking spirits for about a year now, but is sounds like we have very similar tastes. The barrel select is pretty smooth, for the money it’s as good as it gets. I would say it’s a tad smoother than the 12. I will say I like it better than any offering from jack Danial’s. Another good drink for the money is four roses. I started this thread mostly to get some ideas and recommendations since I am still pretty wet behind the ears.

When I drink whiskey which isn’t often...

3 fingers highball glass of makers mark. One oversized ice cube, One cigar, good music, and the rest of the evening to relax.

I would suggest you two try some of the good stuff.

If you start low there is not mch difference between the destilleries (in my opinion). Wehn you get up to 16 or 21 year old whiskey I would suggest Glenlivet - especially if you can get your hands on some of the former Glenlivet Archive fillings (around 1990-2000).
If you want somehing really good I would suggest some 30yo Glefiddich - to me it's even better than the 30yo Glenlivet or soime of the rare Glenburgie fillings.

But all that is just for autumn and winter - as it's summer now it is time for some good tequilla reprosado ;)

To be honest I can’t be arsed with the so called expert opinions. Any good scotch malt suits me. Yes they are different, but anyone who spends squillions on whisky has more money than sense. Just like wine the difference in quality between a €5 bottle and a €10 is huge, put a few zeros on and very few can tell the difference

I'll give the barrel select a go some time then. I liked the Dickel 12 as much or more than the JD Single Barrel bottles we got. Lots of banana, vanilla, and honey in either of those, but the Dickel seemed to have more of a nutty quality for me that I liked.

Four Roses is great, but I've only had their single barrel. I should try the yellow top. If you have never tried Old Grand-Dad 114, it's a must. In my neck of the woods its like 19 bucks. The OGD 114 is neither the regular 40% nor the 50% bonded. Its 57%, as you'd guess. From my understanding, it's the same mash bill as Basil Haydn's. However, this stuff is coming through much more powerfully. That's my favorite bargain whiskey.

    What beers do you like?

Thank you for calling me expert. :)

Leave all special fillings alone, go to some puband get yourself a glass of 12yo scotch and a glass of 30yo scotch and then tell there is no difference. Even my mum can tell there is a difference and she hates all kind of whiskey.

It might be hard to taste a huge difference between fillings of the same age or some of the more expensive rare fillings, but almost everyone should be able to taste an 14 year difference of two rather common scotch.

And by the way: You dont gobble down good scotch like some do with beer or wine. So it's a big difference if you spend 200 bucks on one bottle of wine or a bottle of whiskey...

As far as beers go shiner bock is one of my favorites. We have a few brewers here in Louisiana that are fantastic. One of which is abita. They have a lot of good offerings. Probably my all time favorite beer is Chimay grand reserve. I also like pretty much anything by New Belgium, particularly the 1554. I am not a big fan of IPAs though. And if I am working outside I tend to drink bud light as I can pound those back all day long. I like to have a coors original every now and then as well.
