    I had to poke around to find the answer to this Jemima. If you go to the top of the chat list, there is a "settings" wheel, if you click on that, a menu drops down where the last item is "Available to Chat". My guess is, if you uncheck that, you will not show up on the list, so the people you find to be missing from the list, probably did that.
