I'm in the market for a new device and a lot of the ones I've seen online feature this kind of lock (as opposed to a padlock).

Does anyone have experience with this kind of lock? I'm curious as to how "safe" it really is. Is there potential for a malfunction either having it pop out or on the other hand, malfunctioning to where it won't pop out even with a key?

Used this style for awhile with zero problems. Worst case you expose and snap tabs off I suppose.

You shouldn't have a problem. If they were to fail just stick a small screwdriver in to the lock and force it. I do just put a spot of olive oil on mine when I change over my cherry keeper for cleaning. As to falling out. Not had that in over 6 years of using that type of lock.

been using this type of lock for over 5+ years and all problems were created by us. One time it was sand from a week at the beach and lock was jammed. A few time overly aggressive wife/KH snapped a key in the lock. Another was squirting crazy glue into the lock as a punishment and being pissed off at me. In the early days it was drilling the lock out until we realized a pair of needle nose plier to break off the tab works well.

The one thing we do is a drop or oil in the lock weekly and keeping it clean.

I put a bit of Vaseline in the lock every now and then, never had any problems

It is the best style in my opinion. Super reliable and very discreet. Only downside is the keys tend to be less robust compared to padlocks, so you can snap them. Oh, and there aren't many key variations, so chances are you can buy another set of keys and they will work. I haven't oiled as other have mentioned. Another bonus is the specialty key market has exploded on Etsy for this style. I got my wife a heart shaped key with 2 spares, barrel lock and a 24" necklace for roughly $30 shipped.

pro: lightweight, space-efficient, easy to use and easy to replace should it get damaged
com: highly insecure as any amateur can open it with a bent paper clip or even a piece of paper

I would go for a security screw instead. If you put some effort into it you can cheat that as well, but to me it is a better compromise between security and comfort compared to those locks.

I would favor a keyhole that is inserted from the top down, which makes it easier to insert the key.Something like this cage.

My DOMME has me locked in the holy trainer V5 and she and I love it. The lock is simply pushed down to activate. The only time the key is needed is to unlock - which is next to never for me.
