Painting "Polycarbonate" cages like Original CB-x (e.g. Mr. Stubb)

    We would love Mr. Stubb, but black. [1]

    Currently it's transparent and pink.

    It's claimed to be made of "Body Safe Polycarbonate".

    Do you have suggestions what could be used to repaint it to black?

    Of course it has to be something water resistant, not reacting with oil, lubricants.

    I am less worried of paint wearing off, can be repainted, rather then health and safety (and no interactions with mentioned oils, lubricants, silicon, waterbased, etc).

    You should be okay with using basic automotive, rustoleum-type spray paint. My suggestion would be a primer coat first to help the paint stick to the smooth plastic surface. Next would be 3 light coats of the color of your choice. Multiple light coats here is better than one heavy coating. Finally, a clear coat to seal things in and give it a nice shine.

    I don't think there is any health issues as we no longer use lead-based paints. Just to be safe though, maybe try this out on a spare cage first?

    I believe I would side with @CdFrancine about the paint. It should be OK to use, but I'm not 100% sure.

    There are also plastic paints used for models which might be an option as well.

    One thing I would add is that anyone who has done a fair amount of painting will tell you that one of the most important steps is proper preparation of the surface to be painted. It needs to be clean, and if possible, slightly roughened up with sandpaper before applying the paint/primer. Assuming you've worn the cage, then getting it completely clean of any body oils and dirt which might collect in the crevices would be a top priority.

    * This cage will arrive new,
    * and some rings won't be used, so I can use them as testbed.

    I thought that we will have some "painting mini project" for xmas holiday time, and package ordered on 29th Nov , just arrived to customs in Switzerland after a month... - OMG....
    So we will see when it will arrive and when we will have time to paint.
