I think cock control/ownership is a must, but a device is not necessarily required. Self-control chastity can be a larger test of a boy's devotion, but it also requires a different kind of trust - from the dominant. It really depends on the boy and on the relationship.

Either way, a boy does need a reminder of his Mistress and her control, whether it be a chastity device, cock ring, collar (which can be necklace or other vanilla-looking one), bracelet, wearing panties, etc. It should be something that he can touch and feel, and ideally something that holds him in some way. This is to fulfill his need to feel held and controlled even when she is not physically present, and serves as a constant reminder of her.

You need the reminder regardless of the relationship, but the reminder should fit the relationship and the people within it.
