Just a bit of a off topic thread but just wondering if anyone else has noticed they perform better when working for a female manager?

In my experience I have always done better not sure if it was just conisdance. But all of the Male managers I have had are a bit to "ladish" and they just remind me of David Brent. Sometimes saying sexists remarks which I did not agree with which sometimes isolated me in the team. I am in a much better team now in a job I really enjoy and my manager is really good.

Wondering if anyone else has a similar experience?

    Thank you

A good manager is a good manager and knows how to get their teams working and sometimes it isn't the manager, but the organisation as a whole. A good manager has compassion and an understanding for their staff - this trait is not gender specific. They also know how to play the political nature of organisations and working with other teams.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've had a 10+ year run of both good male and female managers, most of which I'm still in contact with as our careers and paths have diverged. I've always had respect for anyone who has been my manager - if they have earned that respect.

I wouldn't say performance changes due to their gender, but, I do think it changes due to style and how safe you feel in airing your views, giving your opinion and in being listened to as well as how they can help get the best out of you.

Sometimes it's the team itself that can be an influence. Again, I count myself lucky. I prefer mixed teams, I just think they generally function better - but, that isn't necessarily true in all cases.

I think I count myself lucky - I have fortunately never been in an environment where comments like you describe occur - if I was, then I'd feel the need to walk away from it.

It's an interesting topic though - and could be down to a lot more, country, industry - so I'm not dismissing your experience btw :).

I do know what you mean though, and would hate to find myself in that sort of environment.

I've certainly found this. As a PA to a female boss in a corporate environment, I do often get remarks made towards me, like jokes about whether I have to pick up her dry cleaning and her coffee. My answer is yes, and I'm happy too.

My company has had a big push towards female management in recent years (the woman I work for being a strong advocate of this) and its been really interesting (and just a bit intriguing as a female-led society advocate) to see the norm being female bosses around the office. When this has come up talking casually other female staff they very freely say its just better with women in charge.

I find the men that survive in this environment under female bosses tend to be the younger guys like me who have very pro-feminist mindsets.

But thats just my experience. I'm biased lol.

My best managers have been women, but I don't think there's anything in that

As much as I support a female takeover you're probably right. My best managers have been female but I've heard many women saying the opposite and everything in between.

What I have heard is younger men moving up management these days tend not to have all the traditional 'negative' macho/aggressive traits in their approach. And are more balanced in their style. My female HR friend told me while this was excellent, it actually meant young male candidates are now performing better and fit what they are looking for, which (in addition to generally being prepared to work longer hours) means the rate of women getting these jobs over men has slowed down, due to a bit of a more modern male resurgence. Its something they didn't see coming in books like The End of Men, that younger men would have the capacity and work level to adapt to a changing work culture.

That could be limited to our sector of course.

I had both male and female managers that were very capable and good to work for. But because i am a submissive personality, being subordinate to a woman supervisor made me more pleased when i was given orders or when needed, chastised for my work performance.

Well, @jemima , I often wished i could make up for it, by cleaning their flat for them, but work rules prevented that.

I visit an all women office daily, we have quite a bit of banter, sometimes even seems like they are flirting with me and quite a bit of inuendo....i often think of them locking the door and ganging up on me, stripping me of my clothes exposing my panties and chastity cage and them humiliating me.........

I much prefer to work for women. I take orders from them without question. With men, my alpha rears it's head and I am less inclined to just obey. I push back against male managers all the time. With women, not ever.

As a submissive, I agree with @MissyB ! I naturally find it easier to submit to women than guys., but I can't explain it.

I work for my Wife these days, but I had my own professional career for about 20 years. In that time I was very unfortunate, and had no good managers, ever. I did see a few though, in other departments. The standouts were male, but in fairness I worked in manufacturing and there were very few female managers.

I've worked for excellent women and horrible ones. Likewise for the guys.

That said I've worked for more good to excellent women than men. I can only think of one excellent man that I worked for. I really appreciate his wisdom and what a great boss he was.

My current boss is female and while I have NO ATTRACTION to her, I love working for her as she is excellent to work for and with.

I don't think I perform any better, but I do enjoy the work more when a Woman is in charge

I absolutely work better with female managers. Quite much comes to having grown socialising more with girls and than boys, somehow the feminine approach for communication and subtleties come easier and always have had hard time being comfortable in male groups. Not always so, of course there are great men and women with whom I just don't click with me, but overall I prefer to work with female managers and co-workers.
