There has been much discussion about how some members continue to be bullies, overbearing, unprofessional and just jerks. We have a like button for posts. Can we add a dislike button? Then keep track of this for each member and list it in their public profile. That way we can determine if that member is a positive or negative influence for the site.

    Please share your thoughts.

I have mixed feelings on this.
At that point some emojis would also be nice.

While I like the idea of down votes, ike on Reddit where you have dozens or hundreds of viewers on a topic, what would it accomplish here? It wouldn't hide the posts/comments. All it would do is present some feedback to a person who, likely as not, wouldn't care.

Also, I suspect that it would simply be used to down vote a person with an unpopular opinion, as what I usually see on Reddit.

Down votes are a lazy way to avoid engaging a person. Don't like what they have to say? Hit the button. I think it's more helpful to take two minutes and write "I think your opinion is bad and here's why." And then leave it at that.

I've seen the months long arguments on various threads. Nobody is forcing anyone to argue, nor even to read the threads.

If there is a user you simply can't stand, IIRC, you have to option to block them entirely. If someone is making abusive posts or physically threatening, then report them to the mods. Other than that, the problems can usually be fixed on the reading end by just ignoring the post and moving on.

Bullies tend to go away when they are ignored. They get their satisfaction when people bite. I agree with @Tom Allen and @sarah_tv in that a dislike button creates its own problems. Much better to just ignore the idiots and hope they eventually get the message and buggar off. Or ask @L-u-c-y to kick them out!!!

    The IGNORE button works wonders.

Wherever you go there are always a few. For those I just consider the source and ignore it. As said no need to fuel their fire. I would say no

One thumbs down and my confidence would be a wreck. I’d stop posting. That may be a blessing to some but I’ve found great comfort, support and enjoyment in sharing my journey on here. Id much prefer to understand someone’s feedback than anonymous negative responses…

    Dude! *hugs*

I highly recommend Mark Manson's book "The subtle art of not giving a fuck". Read it several times, until it's properly been aborbed into your neural network. Don't bother with his second book.

    Also, Oliver Burkeman's "The antidote".

    Trust me.

And I'm guessing that as you have a Masters in Level-4 Sarcasm, you have totally absorbed that book already, lol.

Sarcasm is fun and funny, especially when directed at people without a sense of humour and that take themselves far too seriously, but that's unrelated to the topic of the books so I'm not sure why you raised it.

Still, at least I know you didn't read either book.

It's a terrible idea. It will create divisions, factions and arguments. Please don't do it.

Having a Dislike count for members is not a good way to determine if that member has had a positive or negative influence on the site.

To be 100% honest, a count of likes and/or posts is also a bad way to determine if a member has had a positive or negative influence on the site.

All likes and posts were not created equal... I have seen people amount more likes with nonsense pictures than posts or pictures that truly build community. I have seen people with less than 100 posts make a bigger impact than people with 1000 posts.

If I have learned one thing from running gaming communities online that might relate to running online forums it's that a lot of people want to be the chiefs, and a lot of people want to be noticed, but the title is just a couple pixels next to your name... Focus on making a difference.
