Wouldn’t it be nice if it is technically easy and free to implement, based on the location of the members for small dots to appear on a global map? And maybe one color for the caged ones and one for the keyholders?
Don't think the numbers in each country would be that hard. Just dump the user list into a spreadsheet, sort by country and count the number of entries of each. Being a (ecommerce) website owner myself I often extract data from the mysql database. Dumping a registration list is actually part of the function of the back end of my shop but wouldn't know about Xenforo...but it should be reasonably easy to get it straight from the mysql database.
I've seen these before on other sites... You have to figure out how you want to regionalize, then figure out how to take the given information and make that work with the regions. Then, it becomes a chore to maintain and winds up fizzling over time.. There's a lot of 'if/then' to factor in... If you wanted to plot by state in the US, that can be fairly easy, then trying to use the same technique in another country, the data may not work as well... Same with postal codes.. some are standardized to a degree that can be regionalized at a larger scale where some countries don't use the same method for assigning their postal areas.... I'd love to see statistical mapping of chastity, would be fun to reference.
Not really, i could do since i has the skills, i work as a developer but it is not as simple as many thinks it is For example i dont want to touch on the current forum, if i break something all the site will break too, thats why developers has a production server and the testing/improving one, if something goes wrong who cares, it is not being used in the real world. So touching without a proper setup it is a big responsability Not to mention that even i know many web technologies i dont know the framework the forum uses, it is php but Joomla and Wordpress are also php based CMS and couldnt be more opositte, they look and feel as a whole new lang, xenforo it is a niche one so very few people will know what they are doing I said last time with other request, i can take a look but in my opinion let it be, the risk is high for such a tiny improvement, it is not an easy task as it appears to be
Its not a matter of messing with the current site. It’s about writing a script to query the database and use that information, to feed a page. And yes a development, testing, and a production server are used on large high use sites. But for low budget clients and small sites backups, testing off line and other methods are used.
It is much more than making a sql query to display the data, first because data is not standarized so results will be incorrect beforehand, i put Spain, not Seville which it is the city i live, spain is not a big country but from Seville to Barcelona are 1000kms, but what if i put it in spanish like Sevilla? Querying incorrect data will make it useless, data need to be homogeneus or it wont add anything to the site If you get good data and it is valid then comes the part to intregrate to the forum itself, i dont know which metodology uses, probably another mvc one but you will have to learn it from scratch in order to do it rigth, nothing about joomla or wordpress ones will be useful or any other. Doing the hack to make an echo by brute force it is just that, a hack and i amnot going to do anything like this But them comes the third part, the deploy, it will have to be an addon/plugin/whatever you want to name it so any mod could make it work easily and painless in the live site The above is more than 100 hours of work at least, if i knew how to do it will be a matter of days, since i dont it is weeks or even months, trust me that it is not an easy and quick thing to do it, it is not php code what you are dealing, it is a framework and usually they are pretty obscure as they have to deal with the template of the site so you cant go and paste the code you want because that code is generated dinamically But if you think it is an easy task you have all my support, creste a bot to crawl all the users to extract the location, store on a database, install a local copy of the xenforo and do your best
IF this were to be done the best way of achieving it would be to process the server's access logs, extract the IP for each successful login request and use something like MaxMind's GeoIP database to obtain the location. It's not 100% accurate but is good enough - however doing so runs the not inconsiderable risk of falling foul of GDPR rules. Technically, the most difficult bit would be displaying the results graphically (a data table would be far easier but not as nice to look at) but ensurimg compliance with privacy rules would be a serious pain. Not really worth it.
An easy way if you wanted it would be to ask folks to respond. We could set something up of those who choose to share their location. Or you could start requiring it. The thing is how much do you want this? If you really want it, there are enough of us who would be willing to make it happen. If not, then it'll die like many great ideas.
I hardly have time to do anything at the moment. I'm working from home but my workload has increased. On top of that I am being bombarded with messages on fetlife, when I get through replying to 100 messages there are another 50 waiting. I like to try and keep up with them or it becomes an impossible task.
