Which is fine. The idea behind a chastity cage is to keep you from having sex AND to keep you from getting an erection. It becomes painful or uncomfortable to get one in your case now, so you'll do what you can to minimize that happening. Which, again, is the point of the cage to begin with. As @BavarianWoman points out, the smaller the cage, the better. You need one that fits your flaccid state snugly, not one that gives you more room.
Wrong. As a grower, when I grow, the cage literally grows out of me and is defeated without me having to do anything. Smaller isn't always better. The act of growing and shrinking over time can loosen a cage fit for me to the point that i can pull all of them off me eventually, although not necessarily past the balls. Hence why I got a belt.
Anyone without a piercing can slip out of any cage, it's not a unique property of a "grower". Smaller ring makes a big difference, speaking as a pierced grower. Last time I had a cage that did as you describe it was a badly fitting cage. Sounds like you found your solution.
