Get a combination lockbox, and download the app time lock for images. Setup the lockbox to have a combination, spin the numbers randomly for a while. Then set the combination and without looking take a pic of it with the time lock image app, scramble the combination so you don't see it. Then set the time lock for as long as you want, I believe it goes up to 2 years.
This way you're not having to risk sending keys to someone else

There are a number of ways to do it, not involving either the postal service or someone else (although they are valid options)

Three things will keep you away from your keys, time, distance and inconvenience.
Here are a number of options you could use - just use your imagination.

Dig a hole in your garden, put the key in a jar and bury it.
Depending on how long it takes you to dig the hole, it'll take you at least as long to find and uncover it.

Get a ladder and attach the key to a high part of the house, the gutter or fascia board.
If you have to borrow a ladder or don't have easy access to it then all the better.

Go to a shop, library, public park, club house, or other public place that has opening/closing hours, and tape the key to the bottom of a low shelf. You'll only be able to retrieve it when that place is open to the public. Supermarkets are easy, but a library that only opens a couple of days a week can make it more intense.

Wrap the key in a plastic bag with a weight inside, duct tape it to the bottom of a tin can and fill it with waste engine oil. It'll be a messy job to get it out, so you'll put it off until you really have to..

Go for a walk in the country away from any road and bury the key next to a recognisable point, e.g. a lone tree or a gate post. A more extreme option is to wait until you do some regular longer journey, and leave the key buried/hidden at a service station many miles from home.

Duct tape. Get a new roll of duct tape and wrap the key in it. All of it. Add other things into the wrap like nails or bolts to make unwrapping or cutting through the tape more difficult.

If you have a dusty cellar, loft, shed or garage full of junk, just throw the key to the back of the biggest messiest corner. It'll take you a while to find it, and maybe not the first time.

With all these options, you're protecting yourself from that impulsive urge to unlock yourself. Many times, you'll decide to unlock and then change your mind before you've even got halfway to recovering the key.

When I first started self-locking, I did use quite a few of these myself.
I particularly liked the long country walk option. One bad winter, there were so many days when it was either dark, cold or wet, it made it much easier to not do it, but eventually I had to go out when it was all dark, cold and wet to get the key.

There's also the classic (how could I forget?)...

Leave the key in a safe place at work.

Your motor oil idea made me think of something similar. Duct tape the key to the bottom of a sealable can, and fill it with paint. Or, just drop the key into a newly opened can of paint? Just another idea…
