I have no idea what happened, but I think it highly probable that the artist formerly known as Mascara Snake, is back on this site under a different name. So the reality is that you can only ban the name and not the person, as someone else pointed out above.

Not wishing to stir any pots, but I am rather enjoying the recent civility and absence of tension I must say.

I have now considered this further. On balance I am now against it too. The slight benefit that might be gained by having a reference point has surely got to be far outweighed by the Admin and hassle (maybe cost too - I don't know) needed to set up such a list for very marginal benefit,

But I do wonder if something else would do. When a Member has been banned then his/her profile is now not available so it is not possible to search for back posts which might elucidate. I wonder if that could now be changed so that (a) it is now visible and (b) more importantly there can be a Mod note on the profile explaining the ban, so that if a current or new Member sees a strike through a name in a thread s/he has been viewing and would wish to respond s/he can get the context.

I recall that when Jens first banned M^S before Lucy's time this is more or less what happened, plus Jens also made a public announcement.

This OP was about the merits (or otherwise) of a list . But the thread has become conflated (partly my fault) with the issue of the circumstances of whether and when a ban is appropriate at all. IMO it shoulf be very rare indeed: average till end 2017 was one every two years!

,But that subject really I think should be discussed separately, possibly best in the one Lucy started about standards re the original charter when CM was founded in 2008. I have thoughts on that too but not here and now.

Later and elsewhere. Watch this space, folks!:)

As we have already seen earlier on this thread, publishing a members misdeeds and/or reason for banning is not really acceptable. I see no reason that a mod note should be left to explain the misdeeds of the person banned. A ban is not issued unless there are exceptional circumstances and it is not up for discussion and debate.

At present there is no banned list, there is no obvious need for a banned list and certainly no need to be publishing the actions of the person who was banned.

How exactly can someone be banned and not get back into the site under another user name?

I can see you can ban a browser session through a cookie, an IP address, a email address. Don’t see how you can stop anyone who changes those things

    Interesting idea.
    Nice running dialog.

My initial thoughts before I started reading ...

    1. Not sure how it could be made to work - or if it would be smart to undertake.
    - We dont have an 8th Amendment at CM [protection against cruel or unusual punishment] ... but this sounds a little like The Scarlet Letter.
    - But at the same time its not unlike Arrest Summary Reports already being posted in some newspapers.

    2. It might be nice to know but I doubt I would look at it.
    - I kind of have my own compass that leads me to attraction or repulsion.
    - Certainly my posts are not received the same way between members.
    - Even folks that turn me off occasionally have something positive to say.
    - I suppose I take what I want and leave the rest.
    - But, if someone is offensive, a shot across the bow is in order.
[and to be sure, I have not been a target here of abuse or blackmail]

    3. I suppose a time I might look at such a list is if someone 'disappears' and I was curious to find out why.
    - Maybe not a list per se ... maybe it would be easier to include a symbol on their Profile Page.
[that is if this idea was to be incorporated]

    4. Who has the time to administer this?
    - Sounds like a very labor intensive task.
    - Would it be a team effort to decide who is banned & for how long?
    - I would rather see time & energy spent on upgrades & features.

    Agreed.
May well be that this guy hasn't come back, but he could if he wanted to.

I guess I am not seeing what purpose it would serve as they are already banned. What is to stop a banned person from creating a new persona and coming back in under a different name. If they are banned we shouldn't see them again anyway.

it could make the situation worse if it were seen as a challenge: let's see if they find out?

I love this conversation! I believe it’s an inherent responsibility for leadership to “out” predators ASAP. I believe giving a kid or a Miss a heads up could save a life. I will bet relationships don’t always stay on this site and who knows what excuses they have for not being here anymore are.

I doubt everyone that gets dismissed is a predator so I feel we don’t need to hear about every little infraction.

IP addresses today are not a reliable way to identify an individual. With NAT, there can be many unrelated people using the same outward facing IP address, depending on how the local network is configured. Also, if you reboot the local router, it will just get a new address from the ISP.

It is not reliable, and it has the risk of affecting innocent persons.

I’ve only been here a short while but I haven’t seen anything inappropriate posted ( well at least not inappropriate for this site:)) so I guess the folks moderating are doing a good job

I don't see any reason to have a banned list. Firstly, because it's so easy to change your email address and IP, a new account is just a few clicks away. Second, it introduces a lot of drama. Sympathizers trying to ask for forgiveness, Mods having to post a lot of justification.

Taking it to a workplace example, for the folks who were fired and the boss put out a long email justifying it, that just created needless division among the workforce. For people who had no knowledge of the original drama, it brought it all back up for everyone.
