Totally field dependent. In my degree area, I won’t find one that pays anything close to reasonable, but I can get an interview within hours of applying. Realms that I have extensive experience in the pay is good, but the job market is super difficult to get a call back in.

Good luck on the search, I have mostly stepped away from the search. I embraced the stay at home dad role, and do some side hustles and specialty work to help out while my wife works.

I have a master's in applied economics with a bachelor's in international economics and japanese. I was a forecast analyst for just over 3 years until i got laid off. Now I am an executive assistant making 40% less pay with zero benefits.

I have a degree as a medical technologist, but made nearly 4X as much working the oil patch. When that slowed a bit I began driving a truck 5 nights/week and still double the lab money. Be flexible. It’s all about the money. Not the job.

I feel relatively secure on my job as a lawyer in a large corporation bit if i were to lose my job i would be screwed

The next recession we go into in the US is going to result in alot of ugliness as peoples and nations are scapegoated. I am afraid we have seen this movie before and it does not end well

Based on your location you listed, good luck. Maybe try going south a bit. I’m a master electrician and now that the US is over saturated with college degrees, skilled trades pays premium.

You don’t know how many 18-35 year old people I’ve steered toward the trades. Licensed plumbers, electricians, HVAC, etc.......pay is outstanding and the work is never ending. If I were a bit younger and didn’t have chronic back trouble that puts me out of commission occasionally, I’d be retraining right now as a plumber. I’ve written enough checks to plumbers to know the dirty work pays very well.

I live about 40 mins from Nashville TN which supposedly has so many jobs that they can't fill them. Been working on the Ole Resume trying to improve it.

I own my own automotive repair business. It can be a struggle to find qualified applicants. Plenty to choose from but skill level is hard to judge during an interview. Plus I have to deal with temperament issues. Seems some skilled trade workers don't always mesh well in a team environment.

I am stunned at the age discrimination I am facing. I have both skills and experience. (and a delightful personality!) During phone interviews I am told I am "perfect" for the job, once they see I am a bald 56 year old, the interest level drops. I am in shape, a young looking 56......but I am clearly not 35 years old.

I laugh at how the online process asks questions about race, military status, etc....under the guise of helping the government. Hummmm.....as if that info is not used to discriminate.

It's complete bullshit. The joke is on the companies AND the government: because of demographics, the day is soon coming where they will BEG older people to work and pay for social security taxes and medicare taxes. Only then will we be in the driver's seat.

When that happens, I will demand free porn access and time to ..........LOL.

I feel for the original poster......he is correct. This sucks.

I honestly feel that my size is being discriminated against. I grew up farming played football lift weights regularly. I am a big dude and always have been. I could afford to lose a ton of weight but whenever I get check ups i'm healthy as a damn horse.

Don’t get mad. Hear me out. Are you fat/obese? It really is seen as a huge(no pun) issue. People see fat and think health issues, gluttony, sloth, lazy, lack of self control and often times unkempt. If you know it’s an issue, fix it and don’t expect others to change their prejudices about first impressions. Or pehaps update your wardrobe to better present what you have. Not making fun, offering thought.

Physical appearance matters for sure, sadly. I’m a bigger guy as well, but I carry it good and more muscular than fat. So being strong has helped me sometimes.

As far as age goes, some employers do not want to invest money in training and such when a person only has a few years before retirement. Also sad, but true. I recently applied for a job that has a maximum age limit of 36.

Posts like these make me glad I didn’t waste a ton of money getting a degree and got into skilled labor instead.
I am sorry to hear of your issues finding employment

Yeah I'm built more like a strongman would be. Tall big and muscular. Heck I go to the gym 4 days a week at least. But heck I just keep trying to lose weight. I was doing really good until I tore my pec bench pressing going on 2 months ago now. I came off my diet when that happened to make sure I didn't deprive my pec from nutrients needed to heal. Which sucks.

Keep putting yourself out there. Try not to take rejection personally. Make yourself available and you'll find work... Only thing worse than a poor job is no job.

I used to have a hard time looking for a job this is the reason why I don't immediately file my resignation unless I found a new job. It is hard to sell myself to the employer, and I hate when the first person to interview me is a woman since I usually get intimidated.

After seeing so many of you having difficulty locating employment, I have a possible solution. Relocate to Texas. We’re hiring everything from oilfield workers to tech and everything in between. Only the lazy are not working here.

I bet with your skill set you could get qualified as a CPA with only a little bit of new training. As far as I can tell, there’s usually well paid work of all kinds for that credential.

I have a friend from my graduate program that graduated with the same M.A. as I did. He moved to Texas in hopes of finding a job and has been applying to 100 jobs a week for the past year and a half and nobody will call him.

Then he needs to change his target. Period. Or keep starving. Too many jobs here not to be employed. It’s about the money, not the job/title.
