    No, locking is not mandatory. Yes, you can interact without being locked. This site is a good place to find out a lot of "how to"s. Lots of good info & discussions.

    As long a interacting means chatting, commenting, yes. You don't mention if its you that needs to be locked or those who are interacting with you.

    It interacting is a contact thing, then probably best that at least one of the interactors are locked.

    Being serious now. I pretty sure no-one on this site would insist that you were locked to chat with them. We are a pretty friendly lot and very helpful to beginners/novices.
