Being an IT security guy, I don't love that they do not explicitly state what happens to the photos after they vet people. I imagine they will sit somewhere on a server with lax security until someone hacks it and downloads all the headshots, and publishes them with the fetlife handles.

That's said, I'm not horribly terrified about having my headshot exposed, but this is more of a "this is a bad idea" objection, rather than for my personal concerns.

 

Well, honestly, the most extreme fetishists are the people I worry about the most. If fetlife wants to verify everyone on the service, then somewhere, there is a server with a headshot of everyone who's been validated, even those that choose not to put headshots in their fetlife profiles. So, there's a significant risk of outing people who, for their own good reasons, choose not to put headshots in Fetlife. All it takes is some script kiddy breaking into the server, grabbing the contents and dumping them on Reddit, and a lot of people will have VERY bad days, and many of them may risk loss of employment and serious family complications. If Fetlife insists upon verification, I wouldn't be surprised if they lose a lot of totally legitimate and "of age" membership. I'm watching it with interest.

So instead I can go through the verification process and once verified I upload photos of someone else and yet remain verified.

If I wanted to catfish you with a verified account it would be easy.

It's called "security theatre". It makes those that know shake their heads in disbelief, and those that don't know feel a more relaxed. It's dangerous for that very reason.

With facial recognition it is tivial to link faces on a kink site to faces on any social media site.

If they wanted to filter and have alerts for CSAM content then cloudflare offers that on their $200 per month plan.

So it's useless for CSAM, useless for verification, and does nothing useful for the membership.

FL are doing it to curry favour with the credit card companies and/or advertising partners...if they can link your sexual proclivities to your buying habits on Amazon there is big money for them.

I read some of the Fetlife FAQs on the verification process. It's both worse and better than I assumed. It's better in that they are not collecting all the head shots in one central location for the admins to use. I suppose that's better, in a way. However, it's worse in that they want you to stick the head shots on your profile. You can set the sharing so that they are either for all of Fetlife, or only for your Friends. There is no option for "Only to the Admins", and if you remove the picture, you become unverified.

So, by doing it this way, rather than making the pictures only accessible to a few IT savvy Admins, you are instead forced to share them to anyone in your Friends list, so your privacy is as good as the worst password on anyone you've friended on Fetlife.

I know I'm a bit weird, in that I have a password database and a unique, jibberish password for every.... single... thing I ever log into, and never save my passwords in my browser, but I know how most "normal" people manage passwords. Again, Hard Pass. RED RED RED. SAFEWORD!

 

I don’t see the point. There’s nothing that benefits me getting “verified”.

I’ve been on FL almost from the start answer I’m less than impressed with John Baku. I don’t trust him, and worse I suspect he’s doing things that are illegal. Note I’m not saying he is, just that I suspect he may be.

On top of that, FL has a long history of not being well run. So there is NO WAY IN HELL, that I’m giving that site any personal information.

if people want to “verify” me, they can come to an event I’m at. They can take time to talk to me and get to know me. They can meet my friends and get to know all of us. If they like me or my friends, great. If not, that’s fine too.

As for the benefits. I don’t give a damn about K&P. And I don’t care if my profile is at the top. I get enough people who can’t read my profile send me message and try to friend me that I’ve never me. And I’m clear, I don’t friend people I don’t know.

So I agree this verification is all for Baku’s benefit. Personally if there was an alternative, I’d be gone. Unfortunately FL has critical mass and is the FB of kink. Oh and ditto for FB. I’d dum0 them too if there was a real alternative.

 

The best alternative is no social media at all, tbh.
