I was thinking of getting a 3D Printer so I can print my own Lego blocks. Anyone with suggestions?

    Edit: I just couldn't resist...

Someone made a joke about 3d printing Lego, knowing I would disapprove. It was my humour in response.

It was a harmless comment. 3D printed gunpowder doesn't even work.

Half the guys here are in the UK and don't even know what a gun looks like, anyway.

I just remember a big fuss being made at the beginning of 3D printing for the masses, and how people would be able to "print a gun!" Shock! Horror! And the tabloids ran with it. And the plebs believed them. So there's always been a weird link in my mind with guns and 3d printers.

Pointy end away from you. Right? I don't even know where I would buy one. That's why I need a 3D printer!

True. But, in the U.S. we take gun safety seriously, certainly responsible people do.

I was taught to treat every gun as if it was loaded, even if you "know" it is not loaded. It only takes one slip up for it to be a bad day for several people.

But, his original comment suggested that someone shoot themselves, which just rang wrong with me, even said in jest.

You, yourself might take gun safety seriously, but to state that the U.S. takes gun safety seriously is a lie. In the UK there are very strict laws on who, and how someone keeps guns. The vast majority of us just don't even consider owning one. You are 4 times more likely to be murdered in the US compared to the UK. That's what should offend people.

    Oh crap, here we go.

In all of those areas in which gun violence is high, the statistic that most people miss is that well over 90% of the time the guns were obtained and used illegally.

The incidence of *legal* gun owners committing crimes is literally slightly less than that of policemen committing crimes.

Read that again. Legal firearm owners in the US are the most law abiding demographic with regard to gun crimes. In most states, they are required to take a class covering safety, handling, storage, laws, and how to be aware enough to know when and how to use it.

Yes, news reports love to show the Yahoos walking around with their 1911s and AR pistols, but a) they are a minority, and b) they don't actually use them on anyone. They are usually making a political statement.

The media makes it seem like the average person is 4x more likely to be shot. In fact, it is more typically gang and drug related crimes, plus a lot of bad aim and mistaken identities (criminals don't spend much time at the range practicing). And ironically, it happens in our major cities, which have very strict laws and regulations. There are significantly fewer *legal* gun owners in Chicago, St Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia where most of the crime is happening.

"For every complex problem, there is a solution that is clear, simple, and wrong." - -- H. L. Mencken

We do probably have a biased, or even sheltered view of things in the UK. I stand corrected.
