Thought Experiment: What would an actual real-life and functioning Matriarchy look like?

Saudi Arabia has been brought up in this thread. A distinct example of this. Would there be more strong dominant Saudi women if their culture allowed it? Would there be more submissive Saudi men if they learned to be more submissive to women when they were younger in school?

 

I see your point. I was referring to our (European/US/Western) culture. Obviously, FLR and certain religions are incompatible. Our fetish requires high degree of agnosticism/atheism to become mainstream.

I think in patriarchal societies, women can often be dominant in the home, or when they reach aged matriarch status. However, the culture and legal structure limits them.

 

Paganism (think Minoan-type culture) would definitely work. However, going back to paganism in our age seems a tad less realistic than creating legal framework for enforceable NCC contracts.

 

So now the obvious question is, would matriarchy be considered a religion instead of a form of government? It seems like a very realistic thing that could happen if you make it more or a personal decision rather than involving politics/government.

 

Indeed. But to make religious choices (in this case, the Matriarchial tradition) legally binding even to a certain degree, there'd have to be a theocratic element in the government.

 

In your matriarchal state, does any woman have dominion over you? Would you just be submissive to one woman or women in general? Do you belong to a female state or is it more of a domestic situation? Maybe in a future matriarchal state, men could be moved around or traded in the same way that sports teams trade players. The women decided where and what is best for you based on who and what you are.

The original brief was that this should be a real-life matriarchy. So, I think you have to imagine all of the above, but much much more vanilla.

Your wife has the better job, and her name's on the mortgage or lease. The police tend to side with the woman by default, and the legal assumption is that a wife-to-husband assault is unlikely. So in the back of your mind is the thought that she can have you thrown out into the street.

Women have the economic power, so there are practical reasons for acting submissive. In dating, the harassment laws are drawn up such that the only way to be safe is for the woman to take the initiative.

It may well be that, as with many workers in Saudi Arabia, this may be your home, but you are still technically not a citizen. This means you pretty much do what you're told by the state's representatives, your (female) employer, and your wife.

I think that might happen quite blatantly among young women, and the men would just have to go along with it.

 

Sounds like the framework for this great nation is being established. All that is missing is our founding mothers putting quill on to parchment and making this official. Women having economic power does sound like the most powerful yet subtle way of encouraging submission.
