If you had never heard of your fetish, would you invent it?

Same for me.

I sought out that feeling of containment from a very young age, along with a general interest in bondage.

I was also aware from around age 8 or 9 about those supposed medieval chastity belts for women, and I put a lot of thought into the idea of some kind of lockable underwear for myself.

Later in life when I discovered that full men’s belts existed, I tried creating various homemade contraptions with no success, although I eventually made a KTB that I could wear for almost a whole day. So I’d say the need has always been there, and knowing that devices to fit that need might exist helped give it expression.

I agree, though, that the trapped ball device is something I probably would never have thought of on my own. Who says we have nothing to thank the Victorians for?

I think the ideas would have been created by someone somewhere, almost certainly not me.

Once an idea is out there it's fate is determined by whether it gets copied, and that in turn is partly determined by other ideas that have been copied in the society concerned, such as "any change is almost certainly for the worse", in which case the new fetish idea stands less chance of being copied, or "heh why should we always do things the way we always have done them; perhaps this new idea will be better" in which case it stands a better chance of being copied.

In the case of ideas for new fetishes the main reason they might get copied is that they provide pleasure but if they arise in a society closed to new ideas then they may never get off the ground. Typically such closed societies place great store by the knowledge handed down by authority, which is usually taken to be a male authority, so again, less chance of these particular fetishes getting copied in such societies.

For myself and I guess most if not all of the people in CM, who we are has been influenced by our growing up in societies which are relatively open to new ideas, and indeed we are probably a sub set that is even more open to new ideas than the typical person in our societies. Of course this makes it sensible to also cultivate in ourselves the ability to sift out bad new ideas.

 

I’d have to say no for chastity, as it was my madam who found it and bought it into our relationship, as for my rubber/latex fetish though, That’s a different story, as I did try to make a pair of briefs out of the inner tube from a football when I was about 14.

This is an interesting question.
I've had submissive desires since childhood, initially inspired by fairy tale stories. During adolescence I developed a preference for orgasm denial. But before chastity, I discovered cock rings: I read how Japanese men would wear them to stimulate their wives during sex. Then, through the internet I discovered chastity. It all seems like a natural evolution, to me. I'm still a little fuzzy about what counts as a fetish, though: when things become just a part of everyday life and are not intended to cause arousal or stimulation, then can they still be called a fetish?
So, would I have invented chastity? It's quite possible, given that I used to love inventing stuff.

 

For sure. My wife knew this and wanted me in chastity, which I had never heard of. On the question of chastity, it has never been the cage that interested me. On the contrary, I've always thought it gets in the way. It's all about the mental contract between Woman and man.

I’m not sure. I remember as a kid seeing pics of medieval chastity belts and being turned on. But I just thought they were ancient devices. It wasn’t until I went to a CFnm tea party that I saw a CB2k and thought it odd. But it grew on me and I had to get one and try it. So like so many kinks this sort of had a foundation, went away for a bit then hit me and took off.

So fetishes are funny. They can become all consuming, they can wane. And new ones can hit us and become big things while old ones still exist!

 

You pretty much mirror my answer, with the addition of tying myself up (legs) from at least the age of 6, but I do remember seeing people tied up , especially on cowboy shows. I remember vividly one in particular where 2 women tied up a man, and being incredibly aroused.
