I was chatting to a member about this earlier on. This si something that has been increasing exponentially over the last couple of years.
There was actually a case at CM when I was moderator here a few years ago.
The perpetrator was a member. he she, it, was operating from the Philippines and had coerced another member into skyping and doing things on line which were (unbeknown to him) being recorded and later used for blackmailing. The blackmailers had addrersses for all his friends, family and employer.
These can easily be gleaned through other social media such as the dreaded facebook.

I know that most members here will be well aware of this sort of thing.
However there are also often quite vulnerable members that find their way here.
This is a safe haven so far since it's policed mainly by its own members.

    Hmm, I'm rambling now.

    Be careful out there. x

That's the problem with all technology, for every plus point there is a negative and plenty of people willing to exploit it for their own ends! In my opinion people are much to free in posting information about themselves! Even things like chatrooms make me nervous!

You are right and you would like to think people will accept anything done on skype may be recorded and be seen by others including those you rather not. The fact is we all trust others perhaps far more than we should as it is necessary for normal life. Being active in the BDSM scene always surprised how little personal safety others display and claims of no limits abound.

BlackMail is nothing new, before phones it existed, all persons has secrets so backmail is always a risk

I think it is common sense what it is needed, internet is nothing new and now all knows that it can be dangerous, dont do things that in the future will ashame you, for me the classic example is porn models, a day will come in which you wanted to delete all your work and no matter how hard you try it wont happen

For me the excuse of dont know doesnt works, maybe the other person on the line would not do anything but the neighbour who is using your internet is capturing what you do and get the data, the result is the same, if you dont want something online dont use internet no matter how secure or how much you trust anyone

Shakespeare noted that back then, "its better to be the king of your silence, than the slave of your words", the same applies to internet, an adult person should has common sense and know that

You are correct Radio 4 had a programme tracing the history of scams and surprisingly they go back to the time of the penny black. As soon as the postal system was created some saw this as a mean to run scams. Nothing is new

@juan,you know "common sense" is the rarest thing in the world since the invention of the internet.
it rates right up there with privacy

No, what i say it is that we has to behave as adults and not finding excuses to elude responsability, for me it is like smoking, i am "young" (less than 30) and i saw how many friends and collegues started smoking, which it is worse, all tabacco sell here has to has a warning telling that it kills and it used to has also real photos of cancer and other things. What more do you need to know? My fathers didnt has that info and i inderstand that they smoke but now...

The moment you do online something that you will not do in real life is it what it should trigger all alarms, the problem is not other people, it is our selfs and if you can get blackmailed it is because you are not being honest with yourself so if later something happens dont blame the cat, if you did that blackmailing stuff behave like an adult person and take responsability, face whatever it comes, not hide from the world and blame it for all your problems

Well in that case I'm very glad I decided to issue a warning about it.
There has been a sharp rise in webcam blackmail in the UK, also known as sextortion. The number of cases reported to the police more than doubling between 2015 and 2016, reaching 1,250 last year. This year so far there have been more than 700 cases.
And I'm sure that most cases go unreported.

I did this in 2015 on this site. I have no reason to believe that the person I was talking to was in any way dodgy, but looking back at the chat I gave away too much info, email, skype and even a face pic (via email). My facebook is locked down now, or so it says and nothing came of it, the other person sent me pics back, although they could have been anyone. It wasn't clever and I didn't get burned but it's easy to do when you get carried away or are too trusting as I can be at times.

I thinks sextorsion goes more about nude pics that anything else and because mens ask many times for that kind of photo to ours girlfriends, when we broke we dont care any more so some scumbags upload online the pics

Or what happened to the fappening, someway you get access to sexual material and ask for money, i dont think that the % of the kink/bdsm cases is greater than 1%

I aggree about that may be much more but shame make then go silent, bad, dont be afraid and dont let that piece of garbage to make you suffer, if doesnt matter genders but dont suffer alone without doing anything about it because not doing anything will not improve nothing and even make it worse

Thank you for starting this thread, Mistress! Security is always a timely issue and blackmail is a horrible crime. That being said, in the privacy of a relationship between consenting adults, the threat of exposure is a powerful and mind tormenting thing. Care must be exercised to prevent things from getting out of hand on onto the Internet. Once certain trains leave the station, so to speak, they never return!

Given how trains in the UK are right now the sight of a train leaving the station maybe a bad example to use

As a someone who is pretty familiar with cyber security I can say that no matter what you do to protect yourself if you are not someone that has the complex understanding of cyber security you are a vulnerability and should not give out any personal info to any untrusted source. Any Box can be Popped with the right resources!!!!

Yeah the irony of MS warning about stranger danger on the internets is pretty striking.

From my experience, I can say that online blackmailing could be challenging to prove. I was blackmailed by my ex, and all the evidence was erased.

Thanks for bringing attention to the issue of online blackmail. It's unfortunate how this type of activity has been on the rise in recent years. It's essential to be cautious and vigilant while interacting online, especially when it comes to sharing personal information.
Victims of blackmail often find it challenging to take appropriate actions and seek help. I recently came across a website called digitalforensics.com that offers valuable resources for victims of online harassment and fraud. It might be worth checking out for anyone who needs guidance and support in dealing with such situations.
