Is it just me, or when someone says "believe me" when they are telling me something, I automatically have doubts about what I am being told?

Believe is required when there is no proof to offer. Believe is required in church; proof is required in science.

That's like when someone says, " To tell you the truth" I immediately think that they must have been lying to me until now! LOL

Or like the phrases "let me be honest with you" or "quite honestly" every time makes me think that they have not been honest up to that point.

It's the same when someone says 'I don't mean to offend' and then immediately offend. Or when they say I'm not here to judge having just judged everyone. I'm not racist but... is another doozy.

Not quite. What is required for science is repeatable outcomes and a hypothesis. Science say's "Currently we believe that xyz". Science relies on belief, it just does so with repeatable evidence. :)

Your post is proof that better definitions exist :)

However I definitely don't believe in something. I either accept or reject some outcome, axiom or postulate etc. A definition of proof could be the degree of acceptance/rejection by peers. We're on the same page, but allow me to not have to believe :)

It is a reliable truism that anyone who says "believe me" or "trust me" in every statement deserves neither belief nor trust.

I liked Terry Pratchett's use of the word belief. In his Discworld books Gods were an integral part of many of the stories and sometimes actual characters. One of my favorites was the Oh God of Hangovers. I cannot remember who said it but one of his many characters said that they didn't believe in Gods because they knew they existed. It would be like believing in breathing or something like that. You didn't believe in something real.

In a separate strain of thought there is a growing trend of people who believe the world is flat. One of their tenets is not to trust, another word for belief, scientists who say the world is a globe. Apparently it is ok to believe the scientists who say it is flat. Apparently we are supposed to verify all of the science for ourselves.

This is obviously ridiculous as it would mean doing several degrees in wide ranging topics such as atmospherics and optical lensing, geometry and other subjects I don't even know about. I personally believe the scientists who say it is a globe and don't worry about it. Mostly because none of the flat earthers can explain why there is a conspiracy surrounding the flatness of the earth or what is gained from our ignorance.

Just in case there are flat earthers amongst those reading this thread I have a few responses to the main arguments as I understand them.

You cannot see the curve of the earth.

If I was a molecule (something that I believe exists even though I cannot see them) or an atom (ditto) on the surface of a bubble, to my perspective it would look flat. The Earth is big. I am tiny. Even if I am 36000 feet in the sky on a plane I am barely into the atmosphere so my frame of reference is still severely limited in terms of the size of our planet.

Chicago. (Apparently you can see more of it from across the great lake it sits by than a curved earth would suggest.)

Apparently Ptolemy and his sticks experiment cannot be trusted, even though someone at the top of the really tall tower in Dubai gets a few minutes of sun longer than a friend at the bottom. So instead I ask whether you trust Stephen Fry? Back when he was in charge of Qi one of the things he got the panelists to do was press a buzzer when they thought a video clip showed when the sun set. They all got it wrong. It actually set about 15 minutes before they saw it happen. This is because our atmosphere bends light. The more atmosphere light has to pass through the more it bends. I don't need to believe the scientists who say that as I have put a spoon in a tall glass of liquid and seen the same effect.

So if our atmosphere bends light and let's you see things around a curve, and if moist air further bends light as it is even more dense, then it stands to reason that if I am close to the surface of a lake looking at a city 30 odd miles away, the light and along with it the stuff I can see, will be directly modified.

I don't believe you if you insist the world is flat. I don believe you can be that stupid, though you will continue to try and convince me otherwise,

Oh, and just so we are clear. Use the word 'sheeple' or tell me to open my eyes, wake up or educate myself, I will hunt you down and twat you. You bellend.

All human constructs rely on belief.
Your president for example is only in charge of your country because you believe it. If no one believed it then he would just be random guy with a funny haircut.

I would love a scotch but as it is 08:32 it's a wee bit early! Mines a Single Malt, Ardbeg by preference but, like German beer, I've never had a bad single malt.

I was trying to not talk about the President chap as I don't understand how we have ended up in a world where anyone would think it was a good idea that people like him get to run things.

Although it is sad and scary, he is the funniest person I’ve ever seen in politics.

Public figures are judged, and there are critics. Every bad review or critique he received, he has lashed out in a grade school manner.

He should not have said that...you are ugly and a poor dresser ugh what a dog.

I do not want to accept the White House invitation...I take back my invitation, I didn’t want to invite you anyway.

He is lying...fake news from fake people, bad ratings, your network is a joke.

I could go on and on. He’s a 6th grade bully, and partially psychopathic...he has no feel for what is appropriate. He tried telling a dirty story to the Boy Scouts for crying out loud!

At some point he will be deemed unfit for office and be impeached or removed, just hope the missles haven’t been launched before he leaves.

The original post on this thread was about if you can trust or believe the information you get from people on this site. The thing is none of use Really Know anyone here. All we know about each other is what that person has shared about them selves, No one knows what's inside that Person he's taking advice from. So to answer the original question, take it with a grain or a bag of salt. What your getting is someone's Opinion based on their experiences you can do with it what ever you please. Where I live it's 6:00AM now and I Believe it's still a good time for a Scotch ( Glenmorangie single malt )

I actually think it was “day to day conversations like from the umpalumpa president” that started the thread. It’s one of his trademark saying...believe me.:)
