I still struggle to come to terms as to why it has to considered "Kinky" and why the people who lead this life style need to named as such, for me its just us, perfectly normal having a great time. As a practising atheist I dont see those who go to church every weekend labelled as religious constantly, really winds me up !!!

You have to take a look at what is considered 'normal' in the context of the Daily Mail, which is two-fold. Mainly it stems from the Church's idea of sex as being purely a procreative act performed in the missionary position by a man and a woman, but more interestingly it comes from the fact that we are living in the Age of Romanticism.

Romanticism contains within it the idea that sex should be the most pure expression of love between two people, an almost spiritual expression, roses and lots of sighing and if depicting it in film then also fogged lenses and pointed toes (for her). This absurd idea comes directly from mid 18thc European poetry and literature that informs many of our ideas about sex, love and relationships in general. Before this time, sex was an altogether ruddier affair. Certainly the Romans and the ancient Greeks wouldnt have recognised the Daily Mails ideas about what is 'normal'.

The boundary of what is considered kinky is, I'm glad, receding year on year. When we got into pegging in the late 90s (when the term pegging hadn't even been coined for it) it seemed distinctly in the kinky spectrum. The UK Channel 5 TV program that got us thinking about it (featuring, as it did, a demo) got the station into extremely hot water with the likes of the DM. However, these days pegging has practically become main-stream.

Chastity, at least at some level, seems to be heading that way judging from the number of different devices on sale and the number of online outlets selling them.

That hate filled rag is full of double standards . They will publish this article because it titilates mr and mrs middle England . If they catch a some one in the public eye doing it the headline will read " celebrity xx in sick and perverted sex game shocker" and they want be happy until they have publicly shamed them into divorce or resignation .

Stop hijacking the thread. I don't remember it asking for your opinions on the Daily Mail.

I like the article. It's positive and it's in a mainstream rag.

If anyone wants to read more there is a website for the team who did the scientific research upon which the article was based.

    http://www.scienceofbdsm.com/home

An upcoming presentation in San Antonio, TX in January - The New Science of BDSM: Moving Beyond Pathologization toward Destigmatization.

I think we would all be in favour of that :)

Well, it'll be interesting to see the double-standard flown from high next time they do run a celebrity in sordid-shame-shocker. I think it's perfectly valid to discuss the different ways in which the press deal with these issues - and while the article in the OP appears in the DM it seems pertinent to discuss the peculiarity of it being there at all.

I have nothing against any of the papers. They do their job. They have their relative bias. The irony I feel is the lefties cant help but hate anyone not biases in their favour. I hate the Guardian for that reason.

At least the DM printed the story. As for middle england. I am happy to be part of middle england even though I am in Wales.

As for the christian view of the DM. That's utter leftie tosh tbh.

Sorry dude - we'll have to disagree, but it's not very easy to argue against the fact that the predominant culture in this country and therefore of the mainstream newspapers is a christian one. If not overtly then at least culturally informed by.

How can you "have nothing against any of the papers" yet on the other hand "hate the Guardian" ?
