We don't have to atone for our sins? Hmmm?

I accept your point about not trying to earn points, but I would take your Apple analogy and say. A good person does good things because they are good not in order to become one. Whatever their faith, or lack thereof.

Back to the concept of chastity and the Bible. Perhaps this has been said before, but I have been thinking about Matthew 18 where Jesus tells us to take extreme measures to remain pure. Specifically he talks about our hands and eyes. That seems to do directly relate to porn and masturbation. Some people think of chastity cages as extreme, but Jesus encourages us to go to the extreme to remain pure. Thoughts?

I personally struggle with this question.

One can make the argument that man is fundamentally good, and then proceed to list the infinite contradicting examples.

Or one can make the argument that man is not fundamentally good, and then proceed to list the infinite contradicting examples.

I suppose at this point I have settled on accepting that most humans have the capacity for both good and bad, because I have seen as much in both myself and others. It is a conscious choice to encourage the good, and refine out the bad.

This particular belief is fairly new compared to the age of the US. It is a dramatic over-simplification of history, and can be traced to various politicians running for office, attempting to out-freedom each other and prove their nationalist/dominionist bona-fides.

Yes, the US was founded on concepts of liberty, with a great many influences including from France (which subsequently had its own revolution -- and a fairly disastrous one at that). But the concept of liberty was quite a limited one, notably reserved for white adult male land-owners. Nonetheless, it was still far ahead of where most countries were at the time! So it was truly a giant leap forward, but nothing like what we refer to today as "freedom".

Regarding Christianity, many of the "founding fathers" were deists, not Christians, as was in vogue at the time. One of them took a bible and cut out all the parts that contradicted the notions held by deists, and there wasn't much left at all. There certainly were some staunch Christian sects at the time, but the founding fathers tended much more toward deism than Christianity.

I'm an American and a Christian (my roots are, shall we say, puritanical), and I'm not ashamed of either. On the other hand, I don't dress up either falsely; we're all flawed creatures, both in the nation sense and in the moral sense. Accepting that is just part of being honest with one's self, and an excellent place from which to start the work of "pruning" and "refining".

    That is a valid point.

Man (humans) were created in the image of God. If we accept the premise that God is the essence of good, then all of humanity would have the essence of good in them.

Mankind also fell from grace in the garden. If we accept the premise that all people have "sinned" and (apart from grace) worthy of judgment, then we should accept that all people have the capacity for evil.

The heart of a good person and the Christian heart has only one distinction between them, the grace of forgiveness.

Both hearts were created equally in the image of good: God......

To me the use of a chastity device as a “sin deterrent” is very “biblical”. As would porn blocking software.

However, I must admit that chastity devices have their own sexual element.

So like cutting off my hand to stop stealing, the chastity tube makes it harder to commit sexual sin. But NOT impossible.

I’ll say again to anyone reading: My chastity REDUCES my sin.....but it has not eliminated it. And it even, to a certain degree, merely displaced it.

A lot of talk about the heart, being a good person ect. Compared to what? The average person or a perfect God? If I'm to be compared to a perfect God I'm in trouble! I sure hope someone better than I steps in and takes my place at judgement time, it's my only hope!

That is very well said! I would suggest that the sexual element of wearing the devices brings in not bad, I have found it to be good, I never thought a sin deterrent would be so much fun!

Wow!!! This thread has gotten a lot of action the last couple of days!

As I think I mentioned before so forgive me for being repetitive: I view the Bible as God's love letter to mankind. He desires a personal relationship with us, explains how that can happen, and doesn't force Himself upon us... leaves it up to us. But along the way, He also provides some guidance on how to deal with life and it's challenges.

That is certainly appropriate and parallels coming into a relationship with Christ. Before Christ, we did whatever we wanted and whatever felt good. After accepting Him is LORD and Savior, we submit to His will out of a heart of gratitude and a desire to serve Him. This something that should resonate with many on CM.

One of the religious leaders of Jesus' time asked Him what the greatest commandment was. Jesus' response was: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All of scripture hangs on these two commandments.”

I think for most the biggest problem with submitting to God is pride and the desire to be your own god, your own arbiter of right and wrong. I think many on CM are closer to being able to embrace this relationship because of their willingness to submit to one another. Because Christ's claims indicate a decision that will affect an eternity, I think it's worth a rational investigation of those claims to decide if there's something there that bears consideration.

Agreed! There is a similar passage, possibly more relevant due to the topic it was related to (adultery) in Matthew 5 that I posted about back in July. It may have gotten overlooked in the clutter of messages that were being posted on this thread during that time.

Thanks for comment. I also think you are right. Recall that Jesus said only the Father is good. (Perfect). So, I agree, compared to Him we all fall short. Hence The Father sending his son to pay the price of sin for us.

And you might have summed up my feelings perfectly. A masturbation deterrent that I’ve learned to enjoy.

I love how God works. Previously I’d avoid looking at the kinky mansion as I was about to do my daily Bible reading. NOW one is helping the other!

You suggest that Jesus was talking figuratively in Matthew 18, and perhaps He was. I understood it as a true statement Jesus made, an action of last resort, knowing not many would actually do it, but those who did would be better off than those who did not. Can anybody here say they have sinned more with a cage on their dick? If so take it off, but if sin is less then why are we not visiting a piercer? Certainly less extreme than cutting off a hand.

I’m not sure if you were referring to anyone in particular. So I’ll respond as if you were asking me directly.

I think Jesus was using a metaphor. Set your self up for success. Keep the cookies out of the house if prone to overeat, for example. And specifically, I think he meant even draconian measures might be preferable to accepting a sinful life.

I want it to be metaphorical. But the holes in Jesus hands and side were not metaphorical. Do you want it to be metaphorical? Are we hoping it is metaphorical because we don't want to take our sin as seriously as Jesus is suggesting we do. Does it make sense to smash a perfectly good computer just because it is our gateway seeing things we should not? Does it make sense to cut off a hand, pluck out an eye, chop off a foot or make oneself a eunuch if we have an easier choice to deal with the situation? Jesus often taught from the lesser to the greater, so don't smash the computer but get a blocker, don't cut of your balls if getting a cage is sufficient. I'm betting that in 100 years we will all wish we had taken this more seriously.

Death. The first five minutes after a person dies will be the most exciting time of their life, or the most fearful.

Ok. I see where you are coming from. I would add a third option to the first moment after death. Either... Exciting, fearful or nothing happens at all.

That’s true. That 3rd possibility. I’m not sure even the Bible is clear on those first five minutes. Or at least I’m not.

The first 5 minutes after death is more of a science question, and it would be different in each case depending on the cause of death. I think what we are trying to get an understanding of here, is more to do with this:

If we do have a soul, at what exact point does that soul leave the body upon death? Equally interesting as well is, when exactly does the soul enter the body?
