Well, my KeySafe finally arrived today, and when I say finally, I mean it...

    So what is a KeySafe?

Well, it's a small safe with an electronic keypad and key safety opening mechanism.

The electronic keypad has been 'hacked' so that the onboard computer, which is controlled by the keysafe.org:81 site controls.

    It's a neat idea.

You put your keys inside it and lock up and the only way to get them out is for the keyholder to allow you, via control of the web site, to open the door.

Sounds wonderful... however, there are some challenges.

Firstly, there is only one supplier (and its not the manufactorer), which in my experience caused delays, confused communications and multiple losted emails. While I can understand that some manufactorers get flooded by annoying/irrelevant emails, one wonders if the extent to which this particular supplier dumps emails is a little over zealous.

Anyway, after faxs and multiple emails (in excess of 50), I finally got the supplier to despatch the safe.

SO I finally got the box.

A little research having recieved the product, I tallied up the parts...

    purchased from supplier - $550

components - single board computer $70, safe $50, odd bits and pieces $50

software - free off the site..

    bargain!

If you ever get the safe (which is not guaranteed) and it's programmed correctly (I had to rebuild mine from scratch), there are a couple of things to note.

    a) The safe requires a serial port - a dying feature on modern computers

    B) the power suppy will be american (although a european one was promised in the early days).

    c) the site that control the safe seems to be unmanaged and could disappear any time (a bit of a challenge if you are locked up at the time).

    So, verdict?

All in all, if it wasn't such a frightful pain to actually get, and not exactly value for money (but what is in this game?), I still think it is a cracking idea.

It would be nice if there was a less antequated configuration but that said, it is one of the few ways to actually give up all control over your device in a safe and very secure way.

    Not for the faint hearted.

Although I'm glad I (finally) got it, next time, I would make one myself and save about $500

Of course, if any one wants me to make one for them, let me know, now I know how it's put together, shouldn't be that hard and I won't charge triple the cost either... lol

hey how much would you charge for making such a keysafe device?

Probably about 100 GBP - the only issue I have found is I can only find the main computer board being available in the states so although the board is cheap, postage will add a chunk on top of that.

Congratulations on getting it together! I've always wanted one, but could never justify the time and expense to build it... ok, well, mostly the time. I'm lazy! lol.

Let us know how it works for you!

Oh the things we do for fun.

After the initial delivery and me having to basically re-program the thing for it to work (grrrr), I thought, hell, I can do way better than this!

So I popped down to Maplin's and got an identical safe for a tad under 30 squid and embarked on "doing better"...

I am planning on releasing two versions...

An all singing, all dancing version with a touch screen controller and remote network access, with email management function, remote console management and web control as well as the front touch panel and wireless keyboard/mouse.
The software is nearly done and when it's sorted, I'll set up an online demo.

This is the Rolls Royce version and will of course, have a Rolls Royce price if you want one (approx £500)

Now, I'm also starting on a more basic version which will be similar in most spec's, but as I'm using a cheap PC framework instead of a high-spec RISC controller should be less than 1/2 the price.

So why am I doing this?
    1. Well, it's fun to make
    2. It's made in Britain!
    3. It has network access and not tied to outmoded serial ports
    4. It's totally stand-alone and not dependant on an unsupported site
    5. and mainly, coz it's fun

If people are interested, I could sell them a pre-made one but I'm not seeing this as a business (unless the demand takes off)... lol

Please do keep us updated on this. I think this is a great project to keep an eye on.

I'm interested because I'm a geek and like gadgets! I AM a KeyHolder, so I don't really NEED one, but I sure as hell WANT one! LOL

ooooo - was just reading up on the specs for the cheap board - gonna be running Linux and have 2 USB ports... I could stick a camera inside and use one of the I/O ports to turn a small LED light on so the keyholder can see the keys are really really inside!

    Neat!

Ooh, what board? I've been tempted to develop a few "remote control" type things, and a little mini linux board would be cool!

Google Blue Chip technologies - they do a nice 3.5" SBC with various touch screen options.
They all have a healthy I/O feature but they are not cheep circa 150 -? 200 quid just for the board.

I'm using the RE1 with embedded CE 6 as it's easy to program and have most of the server elements already ready for tweak. It can also run Linux - tried that and the mini screen I got with it didn't work (yet).

I went for this as it can easily be bolted to the safe and doesn't need a HDD or fan!

They do a neat N270 which will run any Windows or Linux but you need a HDD and a case to put it in.

On the other hand, you could google for a UTX or USFF board and build up a mini system with a maplin (or general) I/O card. AAs the card is a specialist item, it more likely to cost more than the rest put together!

As a training electronic engineer and computer programmer, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop here!

    * giggles *

Well, camera and touchscreen is nice to have, but isn't it a bit of over-engineering considering that just a simple control of a lock is needed?

It should be possible to do this with a simple Arduino, a real time clock with battery backup, and a driver circuit for interfacing to the lock electronics. The Arduino has an USB interface for interfacing to an external PC, and can get it's power this way.

The only downside I see with this approach is that the Arduino microcontroller is not powerful enough to control a properly authenticated encrypted link to the PC. This means that a MITM attack is possible, at least when the keyholder initially sets the password needed to control the safe. But later (for example if the keyholder wants to change lockup duration) CHAP can be used to avoid exposing the password to a chastity slave eavesdropping at the USB cable.

Why bother encrypting the USB link?

If someone wants to steal a password a keylogger is a much easier way of doing it.

If you were talking about a network connection I could see your point, but no way for USB.

Yes, I assume a network connection, as people with a local keyholder probably would not have much use for such a keysafe.

So in my proposal, the Arduino is placed inside the safe (for obvious security reasons), connected to (and powered by) a local PC. This local PC is then connected to the keyholder's PC via the internet. The CHAP used to avoid the keyholder's password being sent in cleartext takes place between the Arduino and the keyholder's PC, as it cannot be ensured that the local PC has not been tampered with by the person kept in chastity.

The problem with this is for this to work securely, you need end-to-end encryption. There needs to be a tunnel between the remote PC and the Arduino. You'll need some kind of proxy on the local PC to transfer between the network and USB host, and a decrypted copy of any data can never exist on the local PC.

It's a very round-about way of doing things. Putting an ethernet shield on the Arduino and using some kind of encryption on that would be the easiest and safest.

SSL might be a bit too much to ask, but there are cyrpto libraries available. Using 3DES you might have enough room to make an SSH client, or maybe bodge up some custom protocol.

As I said above, I am doing this mainly for the sheer fun of it. Not everyone wants a Rolls Royce but some people do. That's life.
If you can do it for a buck - 50, great. No worries.

Oh, just discovered the ComPort.dll needed to drive the KeySafe does not work with Windows 7 - 64 bit.

As most new PCs come with this, I thought it may be useful information.

Wouldn't it be easier to most of this business on the software side of things on the chastity and KH computer? All you need in the safe is a solenoid and the means to power it.. you could have it powered by 120v and use a low voltage-controlled relay that interfaces with USB? Small simple board.. USB output controlled by software on the computer, sent a signal from the KH?

I'm not especially techie, so I'll do my own research into this :)

why is everyone trying to suggest the easy/cheap solution?

As I said before at least once, I am making a Rolls Royce all singing/all dancing keysafe for the hell of it - the technical challenge, the fun programming, the clever electronics.

It's all in the hunt... I have a regular keysafe already. The one I'm making is a technical challenge. I am not making a business case for it. If someone wishes to have one, fine but the key element is the intellectual challenge of the hunt.

I don't want an easy way... where is the fun of that?

It's fun chasing down obscure code snippets or re-coding a dll just coz it doesn't do exactly what I want it to.

The project is not about cheap and easy, it's about a Rolls Royce - or have I mentioned that already - not to mention, having something different and most probably unique.

I fix things for a living, so coming across over-engineered items that can achieve the same results in an easier fashion drive me up the wall. Particularly a German brand of vacuums...

Anyway, you don't have to sacrifice features for simple engineering. If you want to have to do dance, recite Dickens on your head and then sacrifice a goat before you can open your safe, then by all means do that - I find MY fun in making functional things simpler. Good luck in your endeavor of complication :)

Hi just came across the keysafe.org website the other day and i really like the idea and the randomness of the strict mistress was hoping you might be able to help me? I already have a safe its a time lock safe so it has a few extras but i think i can leave that part unplugged and it will work.
i don't have a comm port so was wondering if i used there recommended board and a usb to comm if it would work or is there another board that would be better suited?(i already have an arduino) and plan on running a virtual machine operating with xp for a win 7 workaround for now

    Hi together,

i also would be very interested, as the concept sounds most intriguing and the makers fully motivated. i would love to have one of these keysafes, maybe even the Rolls-Royce version.

In the meantime, my time-controlled keysafe has to do its work... and it does really well.

    Chaste regards,
    Keuschling
