Ok, I think I've narrowed it down to three choices for my first device:

    Choice A: UTMI Cage
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B088R3799X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A2UN2TWFX3Q0NB&psc=1
Pros: Comes with 3 sized base rings, easier to try different sizes with one purchase
Cons: Looks really big (maybe too big), pee hole looks too small, easier to make a mess

Choice B: Greymond Cage (45 mm base ring)
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y21SWDV/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1XEQQO91A1KKW&psc=1
Pros: Price, lock is embedded for streamlined appearance & lighter weight
Cons: Base ring looks really thick in terms of gauge size

Choice C: HappyGo Cage (45 mm base ring)
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GQBWENW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1GH3HXR8FHXKC&psc=1
Pros: Base ring is contoured for extra comfort
Cons: Big padlock on top adds weight, questionable brand

Which would you pick & why? Which would you avoid?

All three are solid choices. I like the internal lock in the Greymond device. I think I would have to go with the HappyGo device, because of the curved base ring.

The base ring isn’t that thick.

Do you know your flaccid shaft width?

I'd go with the grey mond model. seems like s good size everyone I talked to said smaller better for devices. plus no padlock for extra weight to hang it down or etc.

Then get the Greymond cage. The HappyGo is only 3.0 cm

Went with choice B. The cage arrived today. Getting it on was more challenging than I thought. It was like my balls knew what was going on & kept retracting, not wanting to cooperate. Some pinching with skin & hair (I haven't shaved yet, since my future KH likes me bushy), but otherwise as expected. So far so good. My balls feel very full with it on. Tested it by watching some porn for a good 20 minutes. Impossible for me to be properly stimulated and really not all that painful as my penis tried to grow. Only sign was lots of precum (which goes for anytime I am aroused). We'll see how the rest of the afternoon & evening go & whether I try wearing overnight. Thanks for all of your encouragement & suggestions!

Avoid the Utimi cage. I got it as my first device and it's junk. Super heavy, weirdly sized, many pinch points, and it rusts. Can't speak for the others though.

One other observation: Challenging to get the lock on for the first time. Maybe this will get easier with practice & experience, but it was like I needed 3 hands to hold everything together & get the lock on.

This is not a con at all, it's an advantage. The thicker the gauge, the more comfortable it will be. A thick ring spreads the (admittedly a little heavier) weight so there's actually less pressure. Thicker rings also seem to not let the device twist around so much. Of all the devices I've had, the thicker ringed ones are the most comfortable to wear. I've had a number with exactly the same inside diameter, so it's not the size otherwise.

    Which would I choose?

I'd avoid the UTIMI - the metal used will be suspect. It states 'iron' not stainless steel, and the one of the photos in the listing even says "To prolong the lifespan keep the product clean and dry". The only way you're going to do that is to leave it in the box, not wear it on your groin.

I agree about the lock on the last one, there's a couple of other problems with that type of lock... they can make a noise metal on metal, which only happens when the situation is most embarrassing, and if you're uncut you can get pinched skin... ouch!
Also, the post design isn't very firm, the cage will have both rotating and angle movement relative to the base ring, which might pinch, but more importantly it makes it difficult to get the right fit, the ring gap keeps changing.

I'd go for the second one, better integrated lock, and the two small locating pins means that type of connection has far less movement, better for both security and comfort.

I personally think they are all cheap rubbish, I have been down that route and know not to expect good results, You only get what you pay for, You end up spending more on this rubbish than it would cost for a custom device,
    Been there done that.

My husband started with the Utimi cage. Its advantage is that it has three ring sizes, which helps you find the right fit. However, it is too long for him, and a little heavy. If you are certain about your ring size, then the other two options may be better for you.

I think curved / oval rings are better for comfort and security - especially if the bottom of the cage (underneath the scrotum) curves out, away from the body.
Space or 'play' between the base-ring and the cage is also important for security: too much space and there a risk of one of your balls 'wriggling' out, uncomfortable and you'll be able to pull the device off altogether.
Finally, I also like the integral locks: less bulky and fewer 'clanks'; although I do have one where you can an integral device or a locking-post.
