I have found that the timeout allowed to edit a post is way to short, a number of times I have accidently posted it before
I have finished and when I try to edit it the time has expired. Very annoying when it happens.
Any chance of having it extended to say 10 mins.

    Dianne.

If you have any sort of problems editing a post then you can always ask a Mod to help regardless of any timeout periods.

Yes I'm thankful for that; but often reason for edit is a typo or some error & it seems a bit OTT to have to ask a Mod specially re something like that. I still think a longer gap for edit would help.

I did raise this with @Administrator in PM last year and he reckoned that 3 minutes was ample time to do edits.

I agree with you however. It is far too short - some sites allow up to an hour or even 24 hours for editing.

I also feel it somewhat inequitable that Mods can go back to their own posts 20 minutes or more after posting, and enhance their "argument" by adding to it or removing as well, despite posts having been made after their post. By more, I recently saw edits being made after more than 12 or 18 hours all in the same thread!

There also seems to be a 7 minute lock on PM usage - which seems strange despite this comment by a Mod http://www.chastitymansion.com/forums/index.php?profile-posts/20743/

Or is that just me that has that restriction?

Time for some sense in giving ordinary mortals more editing time I think - and keep it the same for everyone. IMHO :)

Phew - managed an edit within 3 minutes!!! :p

Does this forum software not have the ability to tag a "last edited by" xyz "at" time to the bottom if posts? Most forum software I have used does.

Similarly some software allows unlimited editting until a further post is made rather than a specific time limit. It may be available as an add in bit of code rather than part of the base software, as might the above.

I am admin on two 'nilla forums. We rarely if ever edit or delete people's posts except at their request. Very occasionally we do request that a post is editted or deleted, wherever possible this is done via a phone call, but it is only extreme circumstances, though I appreciate this approach is not possible here.

Selection of mods is difficult, you need people frequently online who are also as independent as possible. Active forum members are usually the most passionate and thus finding suitable people is very difficult especially in an anonymous environment such as this.

Hi @buzz - well the buzz (sorry ;) ) on this is that the edits do get recorded when doe after a certain amount of time. Not sure what the limits are.

See here, here and here: and you will see the post time and the edit time.

This one was also edited after about 20 minutes but the edit history is not recorded for some reason.

Edits done within the current 3 minute rule are not recorded obviously - as you will see from my post above.

I do like the idea of being editable or even deletable until another member posts - it makes a lot of sense. And tags with reasons sounds good too. Although I think it is easy just to ignore that on this system and it still accepts the edit or delete.

As for your last two paras I will leave that for others to go on about elsewhere ;) (no links provided :p)

I'm not going to take the bate, and skip right to the point.

The thread was regarding edit time limits, and yes, for members the limit is 3 minutes, which i still believe to be enough.

However, if others feel it's not enough time, what would you all suggest as an appropriate time frame?

    20 minutes.

I often press 'post' and then realise I really ought to be more specific - or more diplomatic - etc.

3 minutes is really not enough time to consider, compose, write, correct etc. I think 20 minutes would be right for me.

    20 minutes is pretty OK.

However - the downside will be that many threads risk turning into rubbish, because others in a timeframe of 20 minutes most likely has replied or commented on your initial post, and when You change it, the commetars post might end looking very odd.

So I would think that 10 minutes is better - less risk of causing problems - it is still more than 3 times what we have now...

Also I would like people to be extra aware of alerts that their post has received comments while they re-edit - and look into those new post before they publish changes. It can be achieved by opening another window in your browser....

What difference is there in 10 or 20 minutes really?

I think the difference is that 20 minutes is very generous compared to what we have now, whereas 10 minutes is still pretty miserly in my opinion.

It should certainly make life a lot easier.

I did like the "No edit after another post" concept though.

I did mention edit time on Personal messenger - is that meant to be 7 minutes? And if so, I suppose the question is "Why" and can it be extended or removed?

    C :)

10 minutes is good enough to correct any thing or find you pressed post when you did not mean to , or the bus stopped !
On some sites you do get a note if a mod has edited a post and the reason.

I have no problems with spellings or profanity being checked.

Any thing else has to be a lot more transparent but not sure how yet . Though obviously straight forward abuse , personal attack , or hate posts which are a criminal offence in the UK ,must be removed by admin ASAP.
Hopefully though the threat of say a months exclusion for first offence to permanent for a second post will stop that.
    Xx Wendy

    Yup, what the lady said.

There have been a number of vitriolic posts and even threads that might have landed the site owner in court had there been big enough complaint. We do need to keep in mind the laws of the country in which this site is published - the UK, and Wendy is right to mention this.

I could live with 10 minutes if that was deemed more usable for the community - and would want it to be made clear that editing should be for spelling, grammar, deletion of things said in haste and regretted, or to add materially to the thought.

I like the idea of a possible months ban for repeat offenders or, say, people causing outright offence vindictively.

When I want to edit it's almost always just typos.
