I am hoping that I have read what this thread is for and am not upsetting anyone by posting this.
I would be interested to know from members around the world the cost of renting in their locations. I am looking at moving at the end of this year closer to the city and after chatting with some members have decided I like to know what the cost of rental is around the world.
I am referring to an average 2 or 3 bedroom home in an average suburb.
Where I live the cost is around $250 per week but I am 3 hours away from the major city. In the outer suburbs of the city the average rental on a house of 2 or 3 bedrooms is around $350 per week and a small 2 bedroom unit is around $280 per week.
Is this high or low in comparison to other places ?

It seems a little low, but then I'm in San Francisco where it's very expensive. Here, a 1 bedroom apartment in a decent part of the city is around $600 a week. But a few years ago, before the latest tech boom, it was about 75% of that. But if I were to go 3 hours outside of the City (depending on the direction), I bet I could get a cute place with multiple bedrooms for around $300 a month. So I think your range sounds about right or maybe just a hint lower than here. But again, it all depends on which suburb and which direction from San Francisco we're talking about.

@benjamin_chaste I believe the Governess is talking about Australian Dollars not American ones. Any way around Oxford in the UK looks like you are talking about £300-400 per week.

An hour outside Perth will get you a 4x2 @ around an average of $350 / week...

Closer in is same as everywhere.... hideously expensive.....

The Western suburbs will set you back close to double that.... But you'll be extremely close to the city....

I guess it is about fining a balance between wants and needs @Governess Stephanie .....

Are you looking to move interstate or overseas even.....?

    With the absolute kindest regards.

    J.

No, I will be moving closer to Adelaide, but the thought occurred to me what rents were like around the world so I thought I would do a post see what response it brought. I thought members may have found it interesting as well.

Actually the exchange rate from Australian to American dollar isn't much difference, I think at the moment its about 92cents.
So Oxford in England would be around $600-800 per week ! WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well that's Oxford suburbs not Oxford. Property prices in most of the country are ridiculous around here. Except in the North East; in Durham suburbs you could buy a 3 bedroom semi for £90,000 but its so much lower than the rest of the country you could never leave.

When I moved between Perth and Adelaide a few years ago I found Perth about 20% more expensive than Adelaide. probably a bigger gap now that Perth has gone nuts! The price differences between cities and suburbs more than an hour out of cities tends to be significant.

I think Adelaide's still pretty good value for money. Downside is you gotta live in Adelaide ;-) hee hee

till I read the above posts, I thought my place near Manchester would seem expensive at $225 per week (what the agents quote me were I to rent it out)

    Haha, what little I know.

As for moving from Durham...why would anyone? It's lovely up there.
If you did move from Durham would have to do what everyone else does and mortgage. Assets are assets...unless they devalue.
